Everitt YCA 29?
      #1846839 - 04/05/2008 15:01

I am in the process of selecting my first boat. I live on the Atlantic coast of Portugal and will potter as well as the occasional summer passage to the Canaries, Madeira. I'm currently looking at an Everitt design, YCA 29. I have spent hours on the net looking for info but have found little.

Is there anyone out there who knows of this design. Is it seakindly and does it have the potential for comfortable passagemaking. In other words, is it a seaboat?

Thanks.

Think it is one of the ex.charter yachts from Greece. Lots were used and called Merlin 1, 2, 3 etc etc. Fast cruiser. Sailed one across the Channel a few years back in some big seas and never a problem. Think they are known as the Everitt 29. Saw one for sale at Southsea Marina a couple of weeks back (Near Portsmouth, UK).

IIRC they were designed specially for the YCA Flotilla holiday company who operated aound Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia (as it then was) in I suppose the early eighties.

No doubt designed to give comfortable spacious accomodation with a decent performance for day sailing. Big cockpit perhaps and unclutterd decks for sunbathing.

Whether suited to passage making may be another thing.

Steve,

Many thanks for that - very useful. I think you have seen the one I'm interested in at Southsea. Don't suppose you looked over it. or sailed it or anything (!)

I think I recall an article in one of the magazines. They are still operating in the med, but some have been updated to suit use by a sailing couple. Larger galley and heads, and a big double berth forward + smaller everything else. Looked comfy for a sedate charter with every night in port. Sorry this is not much help, but you may be able to track down the article, it sounds like something PBO or Sailing Today might do?

Had a quick look, think she was Merlin XXII and I think that is the one I sailed! Was owned by a guy called Trevor back in the late 90s Didnt get a really close look so I cant really comment.

Have a chat to 30Boat (Nuno) on the forum. He lives same place and is very knowledgeable about the kind of boat needed for your area. Send him a PM.

I did my competent crew course on a YCA 29 in 1978. The idea was to do a YCA (Yacht Cruising Assoc) flotilla hol in the Adriatic. Bought a boat instead! We did look at the Everett designs (Evolutions, Juno etc) but eventually went for a Seal Sinbad.

As I recall the 29 was more of a fun, club racer style boat suited to Med chartering rather than serious passagemaking. I don't have the details but I would have thought she was light for her size but well put together as would be needed for charter and flotilla work.

My son has bought an Everitt YCA 29 at Southsea Marina last week and we looked at it over the weekend.

Very good condition for its age and we wish him luck and good sailing in her.

(I have a feeling, after some of his comments, that I am back in the wood renovation business - so much for me buying an all plastic boat).
