The only reason I can see you wouldnt wire up the the shackles is if it were rope-chain and you intend to use the rope as a long tow rope etc. For the link to the anchor and for linking lengths of chain, I would also seize it up.

i'm intrigued - why not with rope? because the wire could damage the rope?

I think he meant if the rope was needed for other purposes, and required regular detaching.....

I wouldn't seize the rope on with wire because if you were to use it as a tow rope, then it would be easier to undo from the chain. If worried about it coming undone, then use a big cable-tie to mouse instead (as it can be cut off with a knive).

Thanks forum. Yes, the issue of alternative use did cross my mind. Cable tie is a good idea. Thanks.

Just DON'T use copper wire!!!!! Needs to be galvanised wire or cable ties.
Just in case you don't understand, Copper acts with steel/ iron like a battery and the threads of the shackle pin will be the first to return to electrons - so the shackle pin falls out!

Or you can use Monel seizing wire, a small reel from the chandlery lasts ages, I've had mine for years.

It's not a bad idea to tow by a chain. The chain gives you a deeper catenary, and absorbs shocks better.
