Navtex receiver recommendation
      #1851879 - 08/05/2008 19:17

Can anyone recommend a reasonable Navtex receiver - the paperless sort which stores the information in its memeory to be displayed on a screen as/when required.
I had one that printed onto a paper roll on a previous boat and it was a bit noisy when printing for anyone off-watch below.
Thanks
Homa

The Furuno is the rolls royce but I have had a couple of NASA units which worked faultlessly. The difference seams to be in the reciever sensitivity so if you are frequently in areas wher reception is difficult might be worth the extra.

Very happy with my ICS Nav 6 Plus. Dual freq navtex without having to manually swap frequencies and it's also an excellent NMEA repeater. Top rate piece of kit I'd have no problem recommending. Again it's at the top end of the market in terms of price.

I would second the ICS unit as a good buy.
Not only is it a superb receiver with easy to use software, but its an excellent NMEA data repeater.
What I particularly like is that you can filter which type of Navtex messages you receive and from which stations. If its connected to a GPS, then station select can be automatic, so only messages relevant to the local area are displayed. This cuts down on the traffic by a huge amount

Thirded the ICS, had a furuno when I bought the boat - took it out due simply to space - then got a nasa - great unit, basic but great.
Then got the ICS6 plus with nmea readout.
Well, after using all three. the ICS is simply the bee's knees.. a top class unit. best screen on the maret too imho.

Furuno 300D is the bees knees as far as I am concerned. Had a NASA unit but whilst the receiver works well enough the software and the user interface is a joke !!!!

If you are looking to download the information to a PC then the nasa pc navtex pro2 is worth looking at.
The old black unit came with dreadful PC software but the new white one is a dream to use. I leave the receiver on 24/7 ( it draws very little power) then plug it into my PC to view messages. It receives all messages from all stations (and can even swap channels at various times of day). It stores many hundreds of messages and software allows you to select the ones you want to view. The price is also very reasonable.

The ICS also does this, has rs232 output etc.

Thanks Hubert,
I'm after a stand alone unit. Don't have a PC onboard and no plans for one.

So far looks like the Furuno is a strong contender
