NOBODY TALKS ABOUT QUALITY!!
      #493392 - 27/03/2004 15:46

All the talk is about tax on red diesel! The fact is that they will just wack on the tax and sell us the same old crap!! The red "diesel" as they call it is really a low grade gas oil and is just about as filthy as a fuel can be! I have been boating fifteen years and in that time have had to put up with: lumps of tar, lots of dirt (try running it through a filter and you will see) water in it and of course diesel bug!

All of which has cost a lot of money over the years!

If we are to be charged forecourt prices, I WANT FORECOURT QUALITY!!

Barry

I just want to retire with my boat to the Med!

The guy i get my fuel from is better than garage quality, he sells his fuel from his narrow boat (which runs its engines from the bottom of the main tank - he first to get any problems) and he will also has proof that he buy proper red diesel NOT gas oil. The proof also shows the diesel is to the current british standard for road diesel - there are good suppliers about, its just a case of finding one.

all IMHO!
Thanks

Normal Export Quality 0.2 Gasoil [Re: Medskipper]
      #497865 - 06/04/2004 14:38

If you want real shite gasoil - look at MDO ...... diesel supplied to Commercial Shipping - its near brown black, tarry, needs settling ..... etc. etc.

Sorry but the quality you wail on about is the problem of your supplier. Red diesel is standard 0.2 Sulphur Diesel and is no different basically to road diesel of a few years ago before ULS Diesel hit the market. It just has a Yellow Marker / Red Dye added.

So change supplier and get good clean fuel.

Gas Oil vs Diesel [Re: LeytonC]
      #497867 - 06/04/2004 14:46

Diesel is a trade name - same as like Hoover for a Vacuum Cleaner.

Gas Oil is the correct term.

ULS Diesel to EN590 as supplied via your forecourt pumps is actually Ultra Low 50ppm Sulphur Gasoil .........

Over the years I have purchased from suppliers on the Thames, the east coast and most of the south coast suppliers!

Its the same story, open the inspection hatches on your fuel tanks and look at the bottom of your tanks! open up your used fuel filters and see how much dirt there is in the fuel! I've been boating long enough to know that its pretty filthy stuff from wherever you get it!

Barry

Well, we get the majority of our red from Itchen marine and although I don't want to dismantle the boat to look into the top of the tanks, we have not had a clogged filter (yet - what a risk to say so).

Also our boat has a central sump that both engines feed from ( I know - not total duplication and independence of systems but doesn't everyone fill both tanks at the same time) the previous owner was convinced he had starvation and so had it put in as a settler tank. This has a drain tap and we have found it only needs draining twice a year when we get 10-15ml sl brown water and 30ml of sl cloudy diesel. the rest of it is fine. We have never had to change a filter between annual services and only drained the primary filter bowls twice in 6 years.

Maybe Itchen Marine has the cleanest diesel around! In which case thanks + publicity to them.

Anthony
