Red Diesel for Heating
      #915781 - 04/01/2006 17:33

Will the propsoed changes affect domestic users of gas oil for heating which is exactly the same stuff as red diesel? If the exemption for home heating remains then will boats be able to have a red diesel tank for their eberspacher heaters??
Your thoughts would be appreciated
Martin

Except that most home central heating is run on kero because it's cheaper.

Yup - i think if you had a second tank, you could legally run the Eberspacher/Kabola/whatever on red diesel. Similarly the generator could probably run on red too, though i'm not sure what happens if you use the generator to provide propulsion...

Lets hope the baot fuel suppliers will keep supplying red diesel for this heating type purpose I am sure we will all promise not to use any for propulsion except when in international waters!!

Well, not quite. If you read this, http://www.ybw.com/auto/newsdesk/20051106102125mbmnews.html and this, http://www.ybw.com/auto/newsdesk/20051106153941ymnews.html, you will see that it is not a "done deal" as yet.

Yes it is cheaper but I believe the calorific value of gas oil is higher so works out about the same.
I use gas oil because I also run a standby generator off it.
