What's a 'campshed'?
      #1859128 - 14/05/2008 21:44

At several places between St Kats and Hammersmith, I've seen signs warning of 'campsheds' (I think that was the word).

I was very grateful for the warnings, but what are campsheds?

A sort of shelf sticking out about 30 foot from the shore on which the old barges used to sit upright rather than sloping with the river bed. A wooden or iron box filled with gravel/stones /mud. Most are now in a dilapidated condition but some surviving examples can be seen above Tower Bridge at low water. If you don't use the outermost arches you'll be alright.

Many thanks - I know exactly what you mean, and I've seen a couple by London Bridge and Hays Galleria.

I didn't know what they were called, though.

I'm going to use the word as much as possible now.

There is a drawing of one, and description of their use, in "A Mistleyman's log" by Chubb Horlock.

[A "good read", by the way!]

Thanks, I'll see if the CA has a copy I can borrow.
