The nonsense about selling lock keepers houses etc has really enraged me !!!
The system has worked fine for approx 100 years so how dare the accountants try to patronise everyone by spinning us that they are going to improve things with a cost cutting exercise which will actually increase costs
Having said this I think the long term agenda will be to reduce staff costs by reducing the amount of lock keepers
I think you will all agree us forumites didnt come off the banana boat yesterday which is why we are as a group not happy with the situation
ANGRY RANT OVER GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

It really is sickening. maybe lockies will have the last laugh when the call comes in the middle of the night for them to leave their home and drive to the weir to make changes, when they say "cant drive, I ve had a few drinks". And if they are not allowed to drink when on call then I hope they get a severe wad of cash in compensation. Either that or it will be like my out of hours doctor - one doc and a driver that covers a huge area of Surrey, take him all night to coordinate with those onsite lockies and adjust other weirs accordingly. When the river floods (or there is some other incident attributable to lack of onsite lockie) they will have an investigation and then keep telling us over and over (bit like the government does) that it was not their fault, lessons are being learnt, and expect us to believe it if they it enough times.
