My preference is to use Aquatabs (or similar) on a regular basis to keep the system clean, and use a good domestic drinking water filter. The filter can be installed in the cold supply which will restrict flow slightly or via a separate tap sometimes supplied with the filter. Replace filter annually and also flush through if not used for a while and you will have odour and taste free water.

What's wrong with Puriclean?

i've had some success with bleach in vetus flexible tanks. I put a cup in each tank, sailed around for a day and then pumped it out and refilled. Tasted much less plasticy but a bit chloriney for a while.

Jabsco 'Aqua-Filta' makes water taste like spring water. Brilliant!

Yup, jabsco filter is superb.

tany normal non scented 5 or 6% sodium hypochlorite solution (Bleach !) works well for sterilising.. 6 to 8 drops per gallon (WHO recommendations) expensive water filters are just that - expensive.

If you could see what was living in your water tank you might change your mind!
