Portsmouth Volunteer Harbour Patrol - Thank You
      #1914267 - 02/07/2008 09:51

On Sunday June 29th, whilst heading back to Portsmouth from the RTIW race, I got a rope around the prop. Despite going inshore, anchoring and trying to free the rope by diving (thanks son), we were unable to free it.

I radioed Portsmouth QHM who promptly sent the volunteer Harbour Patrol to my assistance. They gave me a 'blue light' escort as I sailed into Portsmouth Harbour and then tied up alongside to give the power to get us into Haslar Marina.

I would like to publicly thank the two Harbour Patrol volunteers for their courtesy and skill whilst helping me. And also to them, and all the volunteers, for giving up their own free time to help others.

And yes, I will fit a rope cutter next time the boat is out of the water.

Colin Devonport

must say I too have had the benefit of the Harbour Patrol volunteers (having found myself gardening on the Hamilton Bank) and must say they do an ab fab. and sometimes very necessay job given the weight of commercial traffic through the narrow harbour entrance -

I can be added to the list. Engine broke mid channel. Harbour parol met us about 1km outside harbour and parked us at fuel pontoon in Premier. They had picked up a call of ours to SeaStart.

I think that QHM might have been getting worried about all of the leisure boats if these chaps did not volunteer their time.

Good to hear that they are helping people out.

I thought they were just there to wave you around the right side of the ballast pile.
