Tried to book a charter yacht on the south coast today. Me (qualified to RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate - not done the exam yet), SWMBO no experience & the kids.
I chartered once previously - a weekend charter (crew as above) in solent. Apart from this, most of my miles as skipper were the RYA courses.
Basically that was not enough. I would need coastal skipper exam or at least one other crew to dazed kipper level on board.
I previously thought all needed was the day skipper certificate (plus say at least one other able person to helm, make mayday call etc.). I thought I'd share this in case any of you had a smililar misconception.

A Plymouth based company. Not a problem with the company - makes sense I guess to look after the interests of the owners.

The larger firms with fleets of (basic) boats tend to be a bit more free with the level of experience required ... the smaller ones who charter out someones personal craft (as opposed to fleet craft) tend to be a bit more cautious - usually as the kit is of higher spec and even with experienced folk onboard they do get some big knocks ....
I've been on flotilla in the med with no more than dinghy certs - but SWMBO is experienced in dinghy sailing too - which made a big difference ...
If SWMBO has no experience you would effectively be singlehanded, so what happens when you are incapacitated? I believe some of the restrictions are placed on the charterer by the insurance company ....

e.g. single-handed "day" sailing only.
Yes, but the security deposit covers the dings. Insurance comes in beyond that... and they might take a closer look at the Skipper's responsibilities.

SWMBO knows how to make a maday call, stop the boat if under sail (OK, maybe not take the sails down), switch on engine, read lat/long from GPS. But this would be a limiting factor even if I had the experience of RKJ.

Judging by what I have seen in the Solent, the only qualification you need is a VISA card.

If you haven't done the coastal skipper exam yet, that implies you are not qualified to coastal skipper level yet, even if you feel you are up to that level. Maybe that's why the charter company is unhappy. Am I right in thinking that a course completion cert is not a qualification without the exam?

As you have said you have not passed the exam and are NOT a costal skipper so you are overstating your experience. I would side with the charter company here
Try a different company but sounds to me like you need a bit more experience. If your only skippering experience is on a training course with the instructor onboard and then you don’t take the exam. You can’t blame the company when they insist that you prove your experience.

I've chartered many times around the south coast, and in the med. Never been asked for more than dazed kipper.
