Has anybody ever used a buyers agent, living in the North of Ireland I'm wondering if it would be useful to have someone on 'my side' on the South coast whilst boat hunting. Appreciate your thoughts.

As I find it this industry is essentially based on "bought as seen" - with the proviso that a correction in the price for remediable defects can be negotiated around an independent expert's report - ie a surveyor. Talking with the bloke you are likely to use as your surveyor will alert you to the pitfalls at no additional expense. Why not accompany the surveyor when he goes in?
So many aspects of buying are personal choice - overall size, sail layout, headroom, heads and galley layout etc that I doubt an intermediary can do a worthwhile job for you.
We all went through this learning curve - festina lente is the best advice I can share -ie take it slowly, there is ALWAYS another deal.
