Sailing Blog's
      #1914091 - 02/07/2008 02:41

Well I've started doing mine a few times but every time I do, I come up with some problem with the site, that puts me off carrying on and I give up. Things like it refuses to accept a photograph, or doesn't let me edit after a set time. So anyone here got one going where they are happy with the site, before I get bored with the whole idea and give up. If so, please give a clue to where the site is. Much appreciated and thanks in advance.
Please don't suggest the search engine, yes the question probably has been asked before, but the search I did showed nothing of relevance.

I use Blogger for the mobo and Webbie's Yotblog for the saily boat. Both work fine, see below.

Well, I've had no problems at all with typepad (wwww.typepad.com). I can resurrect posts and edit from three years ago, post pics etc. etc. I can chose the format and content of the blog, and play around with it, and do other things (which i don't take full advantage of)-

Downside- its not free! (however at $4.95 a month for the basic subs, its only the price of a pint per month. That gives you 100mb storage. More expensive options if you want multiple blogs, more storage and more customisation options etc.)

(ps my strange blog title below is because I started with a blog called the "art of remembering". Now I've changed the blog, I just get sub-blogs from the original title.)

I have been using evrytrail for a while now, seems to work 99% of the time, you can upload your GPS tracks and view them on google earth etc and any photos uploaded are automatically placed on your tracks. Does mostly what I want it my log is here:

We use sailblogs.com. We have the basic package which is free, but you can upgrade to cleverer stuff. We've found it very simple and reliable; you get one picture per post but no limit on your posts. It's worked for us so far, though we are thinking about something more sophisticated maybe.

Our blog is particularly valuable for keepng mothers (one in UK, one in NZ) informed of our movements, so it needs to be easy for them too! (It also means that nothing baaad ever happens to us, at least not in blog-world!)

We use freewebs - free as the name suggests.

Its a website, so more than a blog (photo Albums, guestbooks, you can even set up a forum or on-line shop).

Really easy to use using their on-line editing tools and seems very reliable. The only problem I've found is that you can't update the blog via email so need to have internet access - this is a problem for us when on the boat so I've set up a Blogger account for this instance which allows us to send emails via SSB to the blog account ... just need to work out how to get Freewebs to update its content based on the Blogger site now (sure it's possible though!)

Jonny

I use Wordpress for my Sailingchat site, which is pretty easy to use. I've also used Typepad in the past, I'd happily recommend either of them to be honest.

I've used Yotblog for a few years now and had no problems at all. Posting pictures, editing etc. all fine.

(I also now have a copy of everyone's Yotblog as of a couple of months ago, but that's another story... )

Does that mean there is some kind of security issue with Yotblog ?

No, there's no security issue that I'm aware of, but I'm sure you could get better reassurance from Nick. FWIW I tend to keep a copy of my blog as a Word document just in case of any issues, but IMHO keeping a copy in a different place is a reasonable precaution against the unexpected, and doesn't mean that you expect the system to fall over.

The story of my embarrassing and inadvertant mega blog download was told elsewhere - and no I'm not posting a link to it!
