Dry sailing Shepherd's Wharf
      #1916293 - 03/07/2008 18:39

Anyone dry sail out of Shepherd's Wharf in Cowes? How did you find the service? Is it easy to get the yard to lift in and out?

All opinions gratefully received or any other ideas about where to keep a keelboat in Cowes.

don't keep my boat at Shepherds (no need to dry sail), but know lot of people who do and have never heard any negative feedback - I think the only alternative in Cowes is the yacht haven - hope that helps

I frequently sail other people's boats that are dry sailed from there - it seems to be a very efficient operation, and I've not heard of any problems.

Thanks for the tips.

I am in Cowes tomorrow having a look just to see what's what. I am more inclined to Shepherd's than the Haven which appears to have much more footfall.

Keeping your boat ashore, only putting it in the water when you want to use it.

You will also be pleased to know that it also does not mean sailing without your favourite tipple onboard.

We dry-sailed Chianti out of Sparkes for a season a few years ago (2005 I think). We found the crane-in and crane-out very efficient, a quick phone call, sometimes whilst on the motorway on the way down, and she would be there waiting for us.

We went back to a permanent berth my mutual concent with the marina because we both relaised that craning a 34ft sailing yacht in and out almost evey week was a bit much. There was virtually no cost difference either. Another downside was the boot marks all over the cabin top which was a bit unnavoidabe really.

I'm glad we tried it, made some new friends away from the cameraderie of the pontoons, but would not do it again.
