It's not "a bit" annoying, believe me!
You either want to provide a useful search facility or you don't. Currently it is not useful.
Sounds like you need someone to configure your servers so that search load is separated from browsing load, or to cap the load introduced by searches at any point in time. Crippling the user experience to mask underlying load-balancing problems is a very poor solution.
