Anyone advise please?

Have a holding tank with gauge that isn't registering. Have checked gauge and it seems to work when I put 12 volts through it so suspect issue is with the sensor on top of the holding tank which is connected to the float. Have seen a replacement (about Ł100+) but wonder if there is anything else I can replace it with. Is this the most reliable way to measure the level?
