Genset decision

Many thanks for all your help and information. Have decided to leave the genset for the time being and see how we cope with our current arrangements.

If we find we need one we can always buy one later.

Thanks again to all.

Re: Genset decision

Hi Bob

I am hoping to set off next year. We currently have a 4KVA Pajura gen set, which the boat already had. Frankly I wish it hadn't got one as I am sure it will cost a bomb to run! Mind you it has been perfedct so far - now what have I said.....

I think the most important thing to do is to work out how to use less juice. for example the fridge only has 1 inch of insulation - so would probably run 24/7 and require 5 hours chgarging a day! So new fridge this winter with loads on insulation. When the geny goes wrong, I will dump it, and only get an emergency Honda 2 KW jobby. But first, I suppose i will spend money onm 1st Solar panels and then a wind genny.

What is your experiance on this, Some people seem to think a wind gen is a waste of time in the Med?

Anyway - I hope you enjoy the next season - we will probably get to the Ionian by winter 2009. Thats if SWMBO co-operates!

Chris.

Yes, the wind is not consistent in the Med but the sun is. Hence, solar panels are a much better idea in the Med. Wind gen is a better option in the Carib and other places with more wind.

Re: Genset decision

The genny shouldn't cost much in the way of fuel as long as you use it sensibly - i.e. when it is delivering less than 750W or so, turn it off. The amount of fuel it uses is pretty constant per hp-hr though the efficiency falls off badly at less than 10% or greater than 70% rated load. A diesel genny will cost less to run than a portable Honda, in fuel. You will need to service it, of course, but then you have to service the Honda and you have a bigger, better and more convenient generator.

When your genny goes wrong, and you're going to dump it, let me know, I will take it off your hands! I'm serious!
Yep, better with solar than wind in the meddy, but carib, fine.
