equipping the boat for long term-carib/pacific. presently use gaz.expensive. understand butane ie calor type cylinders prob cheaper but that usa propane more widely used. can refill propane cylinder with butane but not vice versa.please advice which gas is best.thanks chris

I did an Atlantic circuit with Calor Gas blue Butane bottles, often filled with propane, with no bangs.

As you are going outside Europe propane is definitely the way to go. I understand the vapour pressure of butane is considerablty lower than propane. Therefore two issues:
- is it safe to use propane in butane bottles?
- or does it just need a different regulator?
I am sure an expert will be along soon.

Err yes, well they are the same bottles, you just put in a bit less if its propane. But where did you find a propane regulator that fits into a butane bottle?
NB if you use the regulator for the 'other' gas, one way you get a feeble-feeble flame, the other way a ceiling-high jet of fire barely controllable with the taps. Yeah, been there, done that, in an "emergency", don't tel corgi or my insurers please!

Can,t remember the regulator solution, but I was certainly getting CAMPING GAZ botts filled with propane in Ireland last winter (€6 instead of €23) and using the C/GAZ butane reg with no probs.

I'm talking 12 years ago, but had my Butane system changed to Propane by a 'Calor Gas man'. His opinion was that you could use Butane in a Propane bottle but not the other way round. You'd need to carry two regulators, but not a major problem to swop them over. Just check your burners/oven will function with Propane. If you're going long distances I'd go for Propane (and invest in a pressure cooker).

a couple of years back, I crossed to the NE USA with blue camping gaz bottles (butane?) and hat to change to propane in the USA because they've never heard of butane - probably because it doesn't work in their colder winters. I also changed the regulator to propane. I didn't do anything to the cooker and it all seemed to work fine.
It was only when I got back to the UK and went back to Gaz that I noticed the kettle took half the time to boil!

New "plastic" bottels have "clip" regulators with these it seems the propane & butaine regulators are a different fit (for the calipso)
I have a metal "butagas" & Italian butaine which can both be changed for the propane or refilled with propane and a propane regulator used on either.
Im a bit affraid of the propane as it realy dose have some pressure & my gas cooker glows red very quickly!
I was told hear that propane has a lower calorific value? Now im told its higher???Which is it??
Ive found a gas heater called a "riviera" which i want to fit as its very compact has anyone ever heard of this make??
Frends!!When i mentioned fitting a gas heater the two boats either side of me moved???
