Just got back from a day at the local college - SWMBO and I are now fully 'LRC' certified!! I mentioned the course a few months back on here - we did it by correspondence from SeaFish, the actual pack took a weekend to work through with an evening of revision. We then arranged with the local nautical college to do the exam - it took a full day (Practice papers and equipment familiarisation from 9am to 4pm and then exam from 4pm to 7pm). The college fees weren't cheap (£120 each for the day plus the exam fee (£80 ish)), but it worked out a LOT cheaper than a one week course in Southampton which was the other option! There seems a lot to it, 1 written paper requiring written answers, 1 paper which is multiple choice, 1 practical exercise with a number of other 'vessels' (Mayday relay etc) and 1 practical exam demonstrating usage of HF, MF, DSC, VHF, Navtex, EPIRB and SART. However, it all went well and was fairly straightforward. So, I can heartily recommend the SeaFish LRC remote learning pack (although the pack was written in 1997 so some content is a little out of date, but I would say less than 5% of it) if you read it all and do the practice questions then the written parts of the exam and the simulated exercise are straightforward. You do need the equipment familiarisation session at the college before the exam to pass the practical element though. Jonny |

Congratulations to you both. I remember doing it in Southampton, with all of us over 35 struggling to stay awake in the afternoon. Not because it was boring, but because our brains were too old for all day class room learning! Catch you on 8104 in the Caribbean. |

So, I wonder if you now have a correspondence pack for sale ? |

I think we'll keep it for reference purposes - however Seafish sell the pack and cassette for around £20 plus postage so one with my scribbles on it and dog eared pages is barely worth the postage! Jonny |

Well Done Jonny.. nice one. The pack is great value - the only 'issue' lol, is the cassette tape.. eek.. had to scrounge a small walkman from the ex missus to play it (and record it to mp3).. not easy to get cassette plays these days ![]() Happy HF'ing |

Yes, Website is: www.seafish.org The Maritime Radio contact is called Kier Day. The only problem, as Slarty says is the cassette tape - but to be honest there's not much on it (examples of mayday calls and mayday relays) - I did enjoy looking silly with my 1980's walkman on the train though! Have just received my copy of the course material from SeaFish and you will be pleased to hear that the cassette has now been replaced with a CD. Good, efficient service from SeaFish. John |

Well thats great news - I did struggle finding a cassette player that still worked in our house! To be honest there's not much on the cassette (examples of the radio calls), but nice to have. Good luck with it all - we found a weekend working through the material was fine with an evenings revision before the exam. Jonny |
