NW Spain - places worth seeing, one for you Captainslarty.

We're planning a 4 week trip - Solent down to NW Spain. Will probably land in Gijon, perphaps La Coruna. What harbours would those that have sailed there recommend?

Thank you.

If I were you... I'd skip La Coruna, and hop into Finisterre, and explore around the Rias...

I can't remember where this is, it could be Muros in the Ria's, but just to help persuade you...

My website has a section on N Spain harbours, 'must sees', harbours safe to enter in all weathers etc. Should be some help to you.

Try to head direct for La Coruna as a base and to stock up - dirt cheap !.
I Disagree with Nick re heading straight around, the Rias Altas (The high Rias) are also beautiful ! and the cruising on the North coast is sublime..
You can head around finisterra later depending on time..
certainly look at Muros !.. beautiful, camarinas is a good short hop from LC too.

Pick up a copy of nw spain cruising guide - or indeed, Jims site as a start.

Do you want achorages or Marina facilities ?

Re: NW Spain - places worth seeing, one for you Captainslarty.

Thanks for all the advice. I have every intention of buying a cruising guide when I come back to the UK next week.
I don't mind mixing up anchorages and marinas. Enjoy a relaxing anchorage as much as mixing it up in town.

Any opinions on the amount of time we have? 4 weeks feasible? No one seems to offer advice on the return trip...

Thanks

Four weeks is pushing it ,but all deprnde on the weather...if the worst happens you run out of time there are lots of safe marinas and twoor three airports to connect to uk.

Re: NW Spain - places worth seeing, one for you Captainslarty.

Totally agree with Mogy
Four weeks IS a short time to plan an 800 mile or more trip.
When we last crossed Biscay.. we waited 4 weeks for a weather window.
As for airports and leaving the boat here, for instance.. clickair flies from La Coruna to Heathrow every day. Ryan air from Santiago de compostela every day to Liverpool. Plus lots of connecting flights via Barcelona. (Clickair do Coruna to Barcelona every day - maybe two flights... and Barcelona is their main hub.
Not teaching me granny to suck eggs lol, but of course, the worst thing you can do in sailing is to have time constraints.. leads to all sorts of disaster.. so have a plan B, C and possibly D.. and a plan to leave the boat and return another time.

I wish you luck, whatever you decide, and have fun !

I agree with el Capitano slarty! Took me the best part of three weks to get from Littlehampton to Vigo,Weather bound in Southhampton, gale bound in Weymouth,Brixham and Plymouth....then calm seas to somewhere off Cabo Ortigal then thick BLACK fog ,then a good northerly then THICK BLACK fog to Vigo.........in AUGUST.

mogy, captainsaltry: Obviously it can happen that you don't get very far even in 4 weeks (last July great example) but I'm basing my plans on the Biscay Triangle rally which seems to accomplish our trip in 3 weeks. La Coruna is as far as we plan to get.
