I'm in N America at the moment and there are some attractive second hand deals on Iridium 9505a phones around. I'm going to buy one. I noticed that you can buy a data kit like this: data kit or you can buy just the serial connector in the middle of that photo by itself. I won't be needing the stand as I plan to have a fixed external antenna, does the software do anything? I plan to use ugrib/grib.us but will eventually use e-mail with one of the services that removes the graphics etc.. Thanks for the advice. |

I have the same bit of kit for which they charge a fortune!! You not only need the serial cable but also the block connector shown in your pic that links the phone to the serial cable. I do not think you can get that separately. Can't exactly remember if the CD is just info or whether it contains drivers for the serial cable. Hope that helps |

You might be better off trying to do a 'package deal' with a service provider. I got a deal last year at the Sou boat show, £1250 got me the phone, data kit +cable, installation software, a years subscription to a service provider (not minutes on the phone, but email compression software and a 'web diary')and more importantly ~ for me as a bit of a technophobe~ support over the phone or via email. When I researched buying second hand phones there seemed to be potential issues with the phone software, apparently there are some very old phones out there. Initially I thought I'd buy a phone from ex-forces personnel as they sell them off (sometimes with remaining minutes) after returning from the Sandpit but I was told that buying a phone and selecting the best ISP is a bit of a minefield, even for those in the know. What seems like a good deal may not be. |

Robavery, I understand i need the "block connector" AND a serial cable (which is available at any PC shop and I have a serial port free on my PC). Just wondering if there is actually anything on the disk provided that is needed. Troutbridge, this phone would be from a US retailer and it is the 9505A (not just the 9505) so could not be that old. |
