which way round to circumnavigate UK?
|
|
anybody got any thoughts on best way to go round uk? I notice that most go clockwise. Are prevailing winds on west coast sw? Is it feasible to go anti clockwise? I say this having been stuck for weeks in northern france waiting for north easterlies to go away!!

Actually I think clockwise is best in both SW's and NE's!!
The idea being that you will have land to weather and flatter water when on the wind,
and an onshore wind when broad reaching.
With NW's and SE's anticlockwise might be better.
Of course wthe wind is unlikely to remain from the same direction for the whole trip.

FWIW, I'd go anti-clockwise, purely because from where I'd start, in The Solent, the boring bits are to the east and I'd rather come home from Land's End than North Foreland

Did I mention the East Coast?
Funnily enough, I wasn't thinking of there just that long boring drag from North Foreland to Selsey Bill, but now you come to mention it all of the muddy waters and those carrot-cruncher owners would be a good reason to avoid the area.......

The main piont about prevailing winds is going to be the run alonth the channel which is slightly S of an east west line. Given that more than 60% of UK winds are between SW & NW that is definatly a 60/40 chance of headwinds along that stretch. Given how veriable the UK weather is though think is is going to ge you whatever you do but have fun

Clockwise has 3 distinct advantages:
1. Makes best use of the North Atlantic Drift (Gulf Stream)
2. Best chance of a fair wind through Pentland Firth/Caledonian Canal
3. Better placed to poise for reasonable weather to round Lands End.

OTOH I remember reading an account of a round-Ireland record attempt in a fast multi - they had a depression sitting stationary over the country and got all the way round on a reach - you would want to be sure of going anticlockwise under those circumstances!!

isn't it just a good excuse to do it twice?
or else just as you are about to finish turn to your crew and say "Darn! I forgot to lock the car when we left! We will have to go back and lock it!"

We went anti-clockwise. Beautiful northumbrian coast, and excellent scottish coast.
