Here is Meteo France's url for their Navtex page - you can see it in a browser or, being 100% text, use Saildocs.... http://www.meteo.fr/marine/naviweb/bulletins/MED_NVTX.html |

Hi Lemain, I have found that Meteo France navtex is extremely poor at forecasting Tramontanas and Mistrals. The Spanish navtex seems to be much better if you can receive it, however once past capo Creus that could be difficult. The last one I received, Spain forecast it 24 hrs ahead and France showed it to be from the NE well after it started. They did publish a correction to NW about 3hrs later. I think France is so used to strong North westerlies that it will only forecast them if they expect F9 or over. |

you need to catch up with the times. Do a Google on Ugrib and download over Inmarsat, broadband, SailMail or 3G cellphone, detailed 7 day forecasts @ 3-hr intervals. The information is that which is used by all the met-services throughout the world and merely needs a little native cunning to produce a very much better forecast than any poor metman, sitting in an office 1000s of miles away, trying to fit a vast amorphous mass of data into a straightjacket of phrases easily understood by morons using their 2nd language. The problem with ALL meteo forecasts is that they have to deal with large areas, containing highly variable chaotic systems as dead-standard points. Navtex for weather is, with sight Reduction Tables, chronometers, sextants and starsights, a thing of historic interest for the connoisseur. |

Well thankyou for that, but I have downloaded it and it put my CPU use through the roof and froze my computer. Presumably it clashed with one of my security programs, so I uninstalled it and hope it has not left too much rubbish behind! You are probably right about being outdated, but navtex works well where my boat is and I will happily stick to that. |

Quote:To rely only on the GFS model would be negligent and incompetent. The local weather forecast is far more reliable than the GFS model taken alone, and is based on vastly more data and more processing than the GFS model alone. |

Quote: Well, when you go blue-water sailing away from safe haven you will come to appreciate these pieces of 'historic kit' as you put it. Navtex, like LORAN will work when your WiFi link to the marina has failed. |

When I installed this program, it also installed a version of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 which is insecure and can not be updated by Microsoft Update. This was detected on my system by the Secunia psi, which is a good check for insecure programs, so I have uninstalled that also.

Hi JAMES, you have my sympathy bout ugrib, It would not install very easily on windows millenium on my old Compaq Armada 770. It was a doddle to install on my daughter's more recent Dell on xp service pack 11. I had some hair tearing as well as the time and date need to be correct on the computer, and mine was one day off! It took ages to discover this and i had to get a hint from the grib forum and then i posted the solution for others there. It is really valuable for the overall picture, and as one source amongst others, and will help when considered in conjunction with other sources. Is Northwood still doing Short wave analysis or has this stopped by now. Hope not, it was really useful in the Atlantic. How is San Carlos treating you? |

Hi Paul, I think the PassageWeather site uses the same information, so I will prefer to stick with that when I have internet access. Yes thankyou for pointing me to Sant Carles, it is the ideal solution for us as the weather is good enough in the winter to spend time there in comfort. Had we managed to get a place in Gruissan it would not really have suited us, as the Tramontane seems to blow about half the time which is not what we need at our advanced age. We are very pleased with the new marina, although it is not finished yet, they have a great bunch of people working there who are a mix of British and Spanish and all very helpful and friendly. There is a choice between taking a 28 year lease (although probably not many of these left), a four year contract paid up front or an annual berth for a competitive price. The only problem is that grey water can not be discharged into the harbour, so for now we will put containers under the sink drains and empty them. Then organise something more permanent later. I expect this will become a requirement for all new concessions. There is a webcam which shows part of the marina here: http://80.175.158.237:85/ |
