Loch Leven Seafood Café, near Onich: Superb!!!

This isn't just another seafood café or restaurant by the sea. The meals are truly outstanding, and, IMHO, should be sampled by anyone visiting the area.

The location is on the north side of Loch Leven, between Onich and Kinlochleven. I am told that there are a couple of fish farm pontoons nearby, but have no details concerning access or water depths.

It currently only seems to be known to the locals who are keeping it to themselves. We visited it last week with local friends, and I was hugely impressed. The preparation and cooking is faultless, the quantities just right, and at reasonable prices. They are licensed to sell wines, beer etc. This is from their sample menu:

    Served 12 - 2.30 p.m. and 6 - 9p.m.

    Oysters with Lemon each 95p
Pot of Mussels Cooked in Cider £4.50/£8.00
    Langoustines, Lemon and Mayonnaise £7.50
    Pan Fried Scallop £6.50
Razor Clams Walnuts and Herbs £6.00
Lobster with Alioli Half £13.50 / Whole £27.00
Surf Clams cooked in White Wine £ 5.50
    Dressed Brown Crab £ 6.50
Shellfish Platter for one £26.50 / for two £50.00
All dishes served with crusty bread and olive oil
    Side Dishes Salad £ 2.25
    Roasted Vegetables £ 2.50
    Marinated Anchovies £ 2.50
    Olives £ 1.50

Seafood Soup with Celeriac and Saffron £3.95
Salad of R aw and Pickled Vegetables (v) £4.25
Grilled Chicken Livers with Lemon and Garlic £4.50
Fish of the Day please ask
Pork Cutlets with Red Cabbage and Apple £7.50
Herb Couscous with Roasted Butternut Squash and Goats Cheese (v) £6.95
    Trifle with Amaretti £4.50
Panna Cotta with Mixed Berries £4.50
Chocolate Brownie, Ice and Hot Chocolate £4.50
    Scottish Cheese and Oatcakes £4.50

The café only opened earlier this year and has a web page that is still under construction. The art work in the dining room is worth a look.

Apart from being an extremely satisfied customer, I have no connection with the place. I'll be back again!

There is a small pier, belonging to them, just up the loch from the Cafe so you can anchor off and row in. At high tide it would be possible to get alongside.

This is the one with Kinlochleven a its head, north of Glen Coe, south of Glen Nevis. Used to have a big aluminium works there (long deid), with ships bringing in the bauxite (or whatever it was). Now famous for its indoor ice climbing facilities. (Yes, we've heard the one about them running out of shillings for the meter....).

Thanks Les - we're now back in the Clyde, but will moor up there next year. A full report will be issued in due course......
