The New Angel, Dartmouth

Went there over the weekend, to celebrate a very significant anniversary. A bit apprehensive because I'd heard mixed opinions about it and because a "celebrity chef" in the kitchen doesn't necessarily make a better restaurant.
Fabulous meal, excellent service and (because SWMBO booked months ago and threatened dire revenge if we didn't get a decent table) a seat by the window to watch the boats on the river and a spectacular sunset, complete with rainbow.
In 50 years' time, my childrens' children will probably still be paying off the debt incurred when I settled the bill, but I thought it was excellent.
Also stayed in this B&B, which I'd highly recommend as well, though it's the other reason why my kids are doomed to a life of penury  .

Jings! That's a boody expensive B&B!!!
If thats a reflection of the prices in the "New Angel" I would need to take out a second mortgage!
All the time I was berthed in Dartmouth, (two years) I never had a reason to go to the angel.

Good. Have just heard that we're being taken to the new angel during Dartmouth regatta. Thank goodness we're not paying! Will save opening another can of beans on board!

Son took us there on our trip home from Plymouth with new boat last year. Excellent food and wine. I think it cost him about £260 for 4 but you could do more on the drinks front. We were setting off accross Lyme Bay at 0500 the next day so took it easy(ish).

25 years of wedded bliss (he said, reading from a prepared statement). Der Tag is actually next month, when we're on holiday, so we decided to have a weekend on our own, dumped the kids with friends and indulged ourselves.
A7: bill was about £150 for the two of us, though that included Champagne beforehand, Montbazillac with dessert and an agreeable bottle of Burgundy in between. Not horrendous by London standards, I suppose, but more expensive than the "all you can eat" buffet at my local Chinese, which is where we normally go when I want to give the missus a treat .

If you behave yourself you might even get there, so congratulations in anticipation of the great day.
Not even an unusual sum to spend in Nottm. I think it cost me that to take Mrs Stuge out on the night of our "silver", a couple of years ago. The party, a week or two later, certainly cost more.

Ah well, where you go you don't get your table surrounded by a bunch of lackies? who, on a signal from on high, remove the stainless steel? domes from the plates before they put them on your table. Thought the service was very pretentious - you'd love it 
The food however, was excellent - been for lunch twice, as a treat for SWMBO.

Burton Race is an egotistical ass of immense proportions and the service is hit and miss. You could spend your dinner money better at RB's Bistro two doors up from Cafe Alfresco (book for breakfast) or the Anzac St Bistro (locals favourite) behind the church. If you can get upriver to Bow creek moor up at the Maltsters have a pint or two but go to the Watermans Arms pub where they have a good restaurant.

RBs is fine but it's not really in the same class. I stand by what I said - we were celebrating a special anniversary and the meal and service was up to the occasion. As for Burton Race, aren't all chefs egotistical asses? I'm not on commission, by the way. 
However, you'll be glad to hear that I agree that the Waterman's Arms is preferable to the Maltsters for a meal (though I also used to enjoy going to the Durant Arms in Ashprington, dunno what it's like now, as I haven't been for a while) and that breakfast at Alfresco is brilliant.
