British Pilot

I am trying to establish details of a 1950s - 1960s vessel called British Pilot - probably a BP tanker or bulk carrier - any clues?

Re: British Pilot

Bit before my time I'm afraid. I was with BP Tankers from 1969 until 1975 when I transferred to BP Exploration on the Forties field.

You could try BP Shipping at -
Breakspear Park
Breakspear Way
Hemel Hempstead
Herts HP2 4UL

Tel 01442 232323

I got some photos of my old ships from them last year. The lady that sent them to me was a Lesley Hardwick, tel 01442 224149

Hope this helps

Jim

Re: British Pilot

Another dude I know that has fairly extensive records is John Stripp, email him at gracejohn@ntlworld.com and ask him. Mention me (Byron) otherwise he will wonder who you are.

Re: British Pilot

I now have the data I was looking for. Thanks to BP and their archivist, it appears that the ship was launched in 1943 as the Empire Maccoll from Cammell, Laird & Co Ltd, Birkenhead shipyard. It was acquired and renamed by BP as the British Pilot on the 8th September 1946 and continued in active service until the 24th August 1962 when it arrived at Faslane to be broken up.

Further, Beverley Meader from BP Shipping was able to find a photo of the tanker which has been forwarded to me.

Many thanks all

RHB

Re: Alaska

Try the bp Alaska website -

http://alaska.bp.com/

Or try an e-mail to cullorwz@bp.com

Wilson Cullor is an Environmental Project Coordinator with bp in Alaska. If you send him an e-mail with some background as to what you are looking for, and why, then if he can't help you himself, then I'm pretty sure he'll know a man who does !

Re: British Pilot

Re British Pilot.

This was my second ship as Radio Officer with BP Tankers and my first
trip on my own! I was 19yrs old. Qualified at Grimsby Nautical College. Joined MN/BP in 1961.

I joined her in Swansea and took her to Faslane where she was scrapped.

The ship's drawings as she was when she was Empire McColl were still displayed on the Engineer's deck on the bulkhead.

She was fitted with Siemen's radio gear, although BP was directly emplying ROs at that time. It was pretty ancient gear from the forties or earlier! I had been trained on the latest Marconi gear (1958/61) and some of this stuff looked to be out of the ark!
I have signing off/on dates in my discharge book if of any use. Would appreciate info of where I can photo of the old ship = Eddie Lingard
ex BP, ex GKZ, now G3WNQ. 73 +

Re: British Pilot

Try NUMAST - the Merchant Navy union in the UK. They have an inhouse magazine - NUMAST Telegraph - where you can send a letter requesting any information on the vessel you have mentioned. Don't you get the magazine delivered??

You never know, there may be information within NUMAST or one of the readers could help you.

There are two email addresses, one general enquiries and the other for the Telegraph.

telegraph@numast.org

Re: British Pilot

My brother Jack Campbell (from N.Ireland) was R/O on the British Pilot in the mid 1950's. Anybody know him?
