It goes against 20 years of naval training - never volunteer for anything. After hinting something like this in "the other place" I've been getting some positive reactions. So, here goes... I'm willing to organise - with any other volunteers - a Scuttlebutt cruise to Ostend. Going by my previous experience May or early June would be a good time. So, couple of questions: 1. When do we want / can we go? 2. Who would sail his/her boat? 3. Who requires a berth? 4. Who would be interested in a meal together? 5. Who wants duty frees (General Stores)? Robert - the ever charming RNSYC HM - will cut us a deal on berths if there's more than 5 of us, and we let him know well in advance when we would be turning up. There are quite a few Bank Holidays in Belgium in May, so it's likely to be (very) busy if the weather's nice. I'm willing to act as initial point of contact for this whole thing (HM, General Stores, etc..). Won't refuse any offers of help should the event get too "big". It's up to you now. William |

Might be worth posting a "pointer" to here on Scuttlebutt... John |

Well done for taking the initiative. I'd be interested in taking our boat to Ostend early season, and a meal sounds like fun. We are based in Ramsgate. Paul. |

Just spoken to my good lady, who's keen on the idea. So, if anyone would have a couple of berths, we'd be grateful. At this stage, we've no committments other than fetching daughter back from Uni late May, so we can be flexible. A meal togther would be good, to put faces to cyberpeeps. If the South Coast lot can do it, I'm sure we can! John |

Being based near Lowestoft the RNSYC is not too far away, so if the timing is right and I am not overseas, then I may be able to offer self as crew for someone. Could do with a few miles under my belt, whilst working towards DS. |

Hi all defo interested we are based at Chatham can get down to Ramsgate in about 5hrs keep us in the loop we have spare berths too 4 off |

If developing boat purchase is completed in time, then count me in as a skipper... otherwise, I'm on as a crew..... Given this, would pref a later date, as then we are likely to have boat of our own to use.... |

Hi. I'll keep a watch on this depending on dates/circumstances I might be in. Based gillingham, would meet @ Ramsgate. Good idea, thanks for taking the initiative. rich. |

Great idear , would like to join in if we are back in the water. |

Full Circle will be on commissioning trials, and we would welcome a couple of crew from Burnham. Just let us know, and we will be there. Any assistance needed with organising? (As nobody else asked!) ![]() Jim & Lynn |

Could well be interested depending on the date. We have an old (but dogged) 40ft motor cruiser that lollops around at about 9 knots is this slow/fast enough for you ? |
Quote: Thanks Jim, Already had a kind offer from Beancounter. Early days yet, we'll see how it develops. Will post a boats/crew list towards the end of the WE. I realise it's still 2 months down the road - but we should also start thinking about dates. (first & thrird WE of May are Bank Holidays in Belgium - so liable to be busy). We should -ideally - have a date fixed by the end of this month. William |

Speed is not a problem - most are raggies - so everything over 6kts... Don't think it'll be a flottilla type crossing as there are various ports of departure - Medway, Ramsgate, Burnham... |

Hi There Would certaintly be intrested crewing for some one whilst working towards the day skipper ticket. cheers Pip |

With a bit of luck we'll be popping out of the Great Ouse & into the Wash about that time, & would love to join in. Just need a bit of good weather first to get some essential repairs done. Tell Jim_H not to worry about his speed, he's quicker than my old motorsailer by a knot and a half, and that's with the rags up & the iron sail running. In fact if he's that quick he can be the rescue boat! Just keep me posted when you've settled the date. Thanks. |

No boat, but I'm certainly interested in coming as crew if anyone has a spare berth. |

Scuttlebutt never ceases to amaze me – only five days since I posted and we’re up to 10 (possible) boats and 6 crew already. Below the situation today 02/03/05 BOATS 1. Flying Spud (Medway) 2. Sailorman (Ipswich) 3. masterofnone (Gillingham) 4. toutvabien (Ramsgate) 5. Hairbox (Chatham) 6. jimdew (Burnham) 7. Born Free (Great Ouse) 8. Squidge (?) 9. Jim H (?) 10. NAS (if boat) CREW 1. NAS (if no boat) 2. beancounter 3. h00 4. Stemar 5. Flying Junior 6. PeterB Feel free to fill in the blanks. Could those with boats post if they have free berths available for "crew"? To make it a bit more concrete and less “pie in the sky” I would propose the last WE in May as a date. It’s a UK bank holiday WE, but not a Belgian one (should be less crowded). Also sufficiently late: everyone should be in the water by then and a reasonable guarantee of some halfway decent weather. Let me know what you think. Could you make it? If not, open to alternative suggestions William |

The date's OK by me, if anyone can offer an old YMI a berth. |

Cracking work William!! As the date suggested is the start of half term I will not know for a couple of weeks if my services, and the boat, are required for a family trip elsewhere that week. I don't suppose there will be any children on any of the other boats? Looks as if we have a northern fleet, Essex Norfolk and Suffolk, and a southern fleet, Kent. Would I be correct in assuming that the Kent boats might meet at Ramsgate, or would folk leave for Ostend direct from their home port? |
Ah well, that may put a different complexion on things. Also the dates proposed means that I will unfortunately not be available as I will be working in the US at this time. |
Date is not set in stone - just offered it as a suggestion. May still work out otherwise. |
Didnt't think of halfterm. Certainly means my two will be present (9 - 14 years old, one of each). Think the Kent boats will assemble in Ramsgate - that's the way we did it when we were in Gillingham - on one tide (leave in time to round North Foreland before the tide turns) , overnight in Ramsgate, cross the next day. Return is possible in one go (17 hrs approx.) if you time it right |
If we do go for that half term weekend I have got twin girls of 7 who would be on board. Both of the girls are expert crabbers and one of them has a profound fondness for Moules et Frites. If there would be other kids around I could probably persuade the family to incorperate the trip into our longer Whitsun cruise. Could probably easily do something like Ramsagate-Ostend-Niewport-Calais/Boulogne-Ramsgate. HW Sheerness on the 28th of May is 04:25 BST so a nice early start!! |

Last w/e in May looks OK for us Blossom is based in Southwold (just south of Lowestoft) Can link up with Born_Free and Sailorman to create a 'rolling regatta' on the trip south if you're interested. We could run south to Sunk Head Tower and turn east or strike out direct from Harwich depending on tide and conditions |

Last w/e in May looks good. Blossom (yes, the tender is called Petal) is based at Southwold (just south of Lowestoft) so we could link up with Born_Free and Sailorman to form a rolling regatta if you are interested. |

Hiya gang, just a quick update. I seem to have overlooked something when I suggested the last WE of May. There's a maritime tall ships festival in Ostend that WE - Ostend at Anchor. Tall(-ish) ships, classics, etc... This year mainly French & English ships (200 years Trafalgar and all that). Remember it from last year - was quite good. But the harbour was VERY crowded, Robert (RNSYC HM) says he can not guarantee anyone a berth. There might be some berths available at the RYCO, but likewise they do no accept pre-bookings that WE. If this would still be the WE of choice. Robert suggest arriving NLT 26 May AM. The week following that WE is midterm (for those who have kids), so the first WE of June might be an option as well. What do you think? Up to you. Open to suggestions. Some usefull links: RNSYC (mainly English - some French & Flemish) http://www.rnsyc.be/harbour/default.htm Ostend at Anchor (Flemish or French - pictures are in English) 26-29 May http://www.oostendevooranker.be/ General Stores (self explanatory - they deliver o/b) http://www.generalstores.be/ PS: prijslijst = pricelist Portal of the Belgian Coast (English) http://www.dekust.org/EN/visitor/ City of Ostend website (English) http://www.toerisme-oostende.be/default.asp?LanguageCode=E |

your working well William!!. we will go over the thursday prior to the Whit w/e, this is the w/e that the Mercator Race used to go over from Harwich , that is now not so as the "little dears " have to go home to mum @ night. we still go to uphold tradition roger |

hi Jim good new on the boat front by the sound of it. r u in the Yacht Hbr, i used to own Spangle Co 32 she is based there. Oostende is normally very good that w/e especially if the weather is fine, the last few yrs there has been a "theme" arranged by the Town all maritime based & for 2 or 3 days its great fun. the rest of the Belgian Harbours being mainly marinas arnt so much fun + not really in the towns except Blankenburge where the entrance is shallow @ times. no doubt see you around during this season roger |

Jim, it doesn't HAVE to be Ostend. Picked a place along the Belgian Coast as it is within easy reach of most East Coasters. Pick a place in France and the "northeners" miss out. Holland becomes is a fair way to travel for the "southeners". Nieuwpoort is purely a marina town - long way from anywhere, and even if you got there bugger all to do/see. Zeebrugge - would you want to moor in a major industrial harbour? Closest Spar shop 25 mins walk. Ostend's got it pretty much all: stuff to do/see, shopping, beach,... As Sailorman mentioned Blankenberge could be an alternative. However,... Let me quote from the YM Northern France & Belgium cruising companion: Blankenberge has at least two problems: silting in the entrance channel and a reputation as a rather tacky seaside resort. The marina is the best part of Blankenberge; the town deteriorates as you penetrate east into its awfulness. By the time you have reached the station you are ready to take a train - anywhere! Many Belgians are honest enough to admit this, just as the Brits must own up to some equally frightful seaside resorts, which had best remain anonymous. As I said, nothing's set in stone. I'm sure we'll arrive at a workable concencus. William |

I tried posting this a couple of times at the end of last week but they seemed to go astray. so, apologies if they are there and I can't see them. BLOSSOM (yes, the tender is called petal !) is based at Southwold. If Born_Free and Sailorman are interested we could convoy across. With three of us we stand a good chance of getting a couple of waypoints correct .... or is this being overambitious ? |

I'm still in..... boats looking more and more promising... survey next weekend.... we'll be coming out of Ipswich... If its during half term, or just a weekend, then I'll have two on board, boy 6 and girl 9, who would definitely appreciate a bit of company of a similar age... This would be our first cross channel passage (as a family on our own boat... i've crossed a few times on other peoples boats) so company would be very welcomed... I have to say, the June weekend would be easier for us, but the May festivities do sound fun..... don't know Oostend at all.. is there nowhere to anchor at all if the marinas are full? |

Hi, Glad to see you have your waypoints organised. I doubt that Blossom is the boat you are thinking of. she sat derelict at Harbour Marine in Southwold for most of the 80's and 90's until we found her (there are suckers everywhere) and I believe that before that she was west country based. |

Yep, Assuming all goes to plan, we'll be there with 2 kids.... We will have some challenges to be ready in time.... mainly financial... such as affording a tender before we go!...otherwise we're knackered if we get put on a buoy rather than a pontoon!..... but we're game for a fighting effort! |

Hi , Oostend can get V full.I know. Not keen as clambering across decks with children is sall i say interesting, but i will go with the flow.My boys 6 & 8 might well come along and i find that a long week end is better as it gives the children a change to play on the beach. I do not want to influance anything but to reply to the comments re Blankenberge. We too were put off by Nevelle's write up on the town in the pilot and skipped past on each visit that was untill i suffered charging problems and called in to sort it out. A warmer welcome and better place to entertain children you couldnt wish for. We were greeted a young man with a big smile on the pontoons in the new marina who showed us where to go and secured our lines. He informed us where the showers and club house was and told us to ask him if we needed anything .After a very nice meal in the yacht club i went back to the boat to fix the problem, my wife took our boys to beach for a swim, the beaches were spotless had life guards , showers, changing huts and chairs, all for a very small fee.In the evening we found a very good ,restaurant where we ate like kings for a few euros each. I had fixed the problem but we stayed another day and spent it shopping in the old town, playing with the boys in the park next to the marina.Yes there are a few kiss me quick hat shops on the prom and the odd grotty looking back street but on the whole it is not to be missed and definitelyon out to visit again list ,way above Oostende and its smelly fish dock.

in Blankenburgh they "tout of buiseness" when u enter thats y u had the warm welcome. the last time we were there we got gale bound went aground each low water, your not in the town as Oostende therefore not in the "action". Oostende is vibrant & a cross-roads / meeting place for transiting boats, near all the shops & bars with plenty to see all day. |

Well NAS, if you need a rubbadubba and outboard, you are quite welcome to borrow mine, no probs! Anything else impeding progress? Cheers Jim |

NAS, there a buoys in Ostend, but you moor stern on a buoy, bow onto the pontoon. Least of your worries - about half of these moorings are taken up by locals, the other half by early arrivals. Robert's always available to lend a hand. Should you arrive Friday PM or Saturday, you'll most likely be in a raft. If we knew for sure how many would be coming I could always ask Robert to put the Scuttlebut lot in a raft together. As an aside - avoid rafting up alongside a cloggie - they always leave at silly o' clock in the morning to catch the tide. |

OK, I see begin to see a patern. Quite a few boats will be at sea (mainly those with kids) 28 May - 5 June. So we have two options WE 28-29 May (festival in Ostend) or WE 4-5 June. As for harbours it seems we have to choose between Ostend & Blankenberge (both with their vocal advocates). So let's put it to a vote. When and where? Also PM me with you yachts details (length & draugth) and when you would be arriving. Where would you be sailing from & would you be able to take crew. I will post a summary once the "votes" and all the details are in. I would like to have something "lined up" by Easter - we will be sailing for a week in Belgium, France & UK and could try and sort something out then. |

Thanks Jim, Thats incredibly generous of you.... we however need to buy a 'rubbadubb' anyway... otherwise other plans such as Pin Mill fall apart! The only other thing missing between me and satisfactory boat ownership is a min of a further £15K...... but in that I suspect I'm in good company!
In all honesty my biggest challenge is going to be having the family ready! I'm planning on bringing the boat round from the Solent (if I finish the buying process!) around 23rd April, and from there it'll be the first big boat sailing that anyone in the family will have done except myself... and a week on a charter that the missus did with me about 15 yrs ago.... So I have to sit down and think hard about whether I am perhaps being too ambitious and risk taking on something that will put them off rather than the desired outcome of turning them all into addicts (like me!) We all know that a longer channel crossing can be absolutely great.... or it can be down right miserable..... While its true that SWMBO is up for it... I'm not sure she truly appreciates the potential to be mid channel in the TSS, tired, wet, seasick, cold and frightened!...... and I'd rather she discovered that 'pleasure' after becoming an addict, not before! |

NAS, if the weather or any other conditions look dodgy, we shall fall back on plan 2 to go somewhere on the East Coast out of the nasty stuff. Its not a competition mate. You will be in company of mixed ability and I for one will support any Skippers decision not to go for whatever. Once you have poisoned the well of family sailing, its bloody hard work getting it back. So continue with the passage planning, dividers in a blur, 2b pencil rubbed to a splinter, and face the conditions on the day. See you there. And good luck with the move from the Solent, can be a bit uphill through that way. But doing a double tide through Dungeness/Dover is rewarding. Cheers Jim |

Hi Nas You are spot on in your thinking, its not worth the risk of putting the family off sailing if the weather picks up, there will always be other days and trips. I to have to be very carefull when picking the day to go as anything over an F5 will be uncomfortable for the children and leaves me single handed while my wife looks after the boys. Has anyone and idears re a back up plan? And just a thought but if there are a few boats going can we fly something to identify our fellow forunites from a distance ?any suggestions? |

NTM Just got back from Ostend. Situation is pretty dire. Over 40% of yachts in the Mercator Marina will have to vacate their berth over that WE to make room for (classic) yachts participating in the Ostend at Anchor festival. RYCO is effectively CLOSED - pontoon renewal, started in February, has not been completed. Dreding way behind schedule. Unlikely to be operational by the end of this month. This effectively only leaves the RNSYC (rafting heaven). About half the available berths will be taken by permanent berth holders and those moving out of the Mercator. RNSYC HM under instructions from "the board" not to take any reservations for that WE, and grant priority to Mercator Marina berth holders (Mercator Marina is operated by RNSYC). Should you wish to make a dash for it that WE anyway - your best bet is to contact Robert when you're about 1 hour out (+32 (0)59 - 50 59 12). He will try and hold a berth for about 90 mins. If it's full you can still divert to Blankenberge or Nieuwpoort. To be honest - if you plan to arrive later than the 27th you have no chance. If you arrive on the 27th you might get lucky but you'll be in a raft. The sensible thing to do would be to reschedule this thing to 3-5 June. But who am I to advise on what you should do? |

A reschedule would suit me.... as we may well be up for this trip if its a bit later in the season..... probably can't do 3-5th June as suspect day off work is a problem for 3rd, but probably up for it otherwise... but its not only up to me! Why not agree a different venue for this coming BH weekend, and push the Oostende trip back to the August bank holiday?... If the weather is good we are planning a run up to Lowestoft for the coming May Bank Holiday weekend.... but I suspect most of you intrepid explorers will be looking to 'go foreign'... although I guess many of you Essex folk might argue that Lowestoft is almost foreign anyway !

NAS, Aug bank holiday in Burnham trying to get my Sun Oddity ambling in Class 6 (non serious class, no spinnaker, inshore course only) Will consider a mini cruise to Ramsgate then Calais Gravelines or Boulogne and back around then? We have 2 weeks off straddling that weekend. Will be going for Ostend on Friday, 6pm - ish arrival, with a 2nd port Nieuwpoort if the inn is full of Duvel guzzling sailormen...... Jim |

For anyone making the crossing this WE. I will be in Ostend from this Thursday night (+/- 21H00 local). Should you require info in the berthing situation or other "shore support" - you can always contact me on my mobile. PM me now, and I'll give you my mobile number. So far, know of 3 boats making the crossing. As an aside: judging by the number of views my original post has generated, there's certainly an interest for an East Coast Scuttlebut get together. Even though this time the date might be a little "unfortunate". Other dates - later in the season - have already been proposed. Yanita will be away from mid-July till late August. If anyone wants to act as "point" - feel free. Would be available to organise something end of August Bank Holiday. Will |

Doesn't sound good. Have had to keep my plans on hold anyway for various reasons (job, crew...) but now plan instead to head for Vlissingen on Sat 28/5 from the Deben, arriving Sun afternoon, followed by a brief trip through the canal, round to the Roompot & back mid week. May have a couple of berths spare should anyone be interested in joining. |
