Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

Roger,

If the wind is as light as forecasted, we might not head for Burnham.... in which case, we'd definitely be up for it..... will confirm one way or the other by Thursday when forecast starts to firm up.....

We bought a tender last night, so the opportunities are opening up

Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

Roger,

Further reviewing the forecast, it looks almost certain that we'll abandon our plans for Burnham.... it'll be against the tide, into the wind, at just 6kts.... not my idea of fun.....

So what sort of time do you need to get to Stone Point on a hot sunny day to find room to anchor?

Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

Hi, I'm new to this site. Whereabouts is Stone Point? I'm based near Peterborough and am looking for somewhere to use our b/rider - salt or fresh, where you don't have to be a waterski qualified driver or similar. Any advise appreciated.
Thanks

Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

Hi Howzit....

You need to fill in some of your profile to get much of a reasonable response....

Whats a b/rider? assuming its a fast powered craft, then Stone Points a no go for you.... Its 4 miles out of Harwich... its only accessible from the sea, and a good few miles from nearest launch point..... besides, its very busy on a weekend with anchored boats, in a narrow estuary and probably not space for what you would want.....

Can't help you with launch sites in the P'boro area thats don't need qualifications?.... other than can't you use Hunstanton?... what about Fen lakes or Tallington lakes? why don't you bite the bullet, and get the certificate?

For future, this isn't the best place for this type of post..... try Mobo forum instead... you'll get a better response....

Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

Aaah, the pain of being new on a forum - and messing upin the wrong forum! Thanks NAS. I thought this was a general meet up type of forum for anyone, hence the post. I'll look at the mobo forum as suggested.

It is a powerboat and we do use Hunstanton - problem with Tallington is they insist on a BWSF certificate, then when you go elsewhere they don't accept it but want RYA Level 2 etc, so just a bit of a pain really.
Thanks again.

I do not know the Bayliner reference numbers so not sure whether you can stay overnight on your boat. Stone Point is the entry to the Walton Backwaters, to the north of Walton-on-the-Naze and south of Harwich. I would have thought if you do tow your boat for weekend trips the best launch would be at Woolverstone on the river Orwell and then you head south-ish around Harwich to Hamford water and thence to Stone Point. You will need a dinghy to go ashore. Alternatively you could launch at Tichmarsh marina which is next to Walton. Your road trip would be some 50 miles further but you are 5 minutes slow motoring time away from Stone Point. You could stay overnight at Tichmarsh if you wanted marina facilities.

My boat is out of the water still at Bedwells yard in Walton, and I would come to Stone Point in my dinghy, but I am unlikely to be down there this weekend as I have only just returned from a 5 day stay there.

Motor boaters who do not speed past sailing boats, causing them to wobble about, are wlecome at any BBQ I go to.
Regards.
Paul

Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

Howzit,

just looked up your boat design on the net, and its bigger than I had assumed.... ...you'd be fine at Stone Point if you wanted it as a mooring opprtunity... It just wouldn't be a space where you could open 'er up.... although I guess you could have a fun run out of the end of the Orwell, and up to the entrance to the Walton Channel! ... timing could be good for you as its High Water early Sat morn, so a nice easy launch...

Paul,

Wasn't aware that there is a slip at Titchmarsh..... are you coming along to the SB thing next Wed in Northampton?

Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

NAS
Yes there is a very good slip at Tichmarsh and I have allways found the staff to be very helpfull. The chandlery is large and well stocked and French Marine motors have also been good to deal with. For such a large enterprise I think it is OK.

No I will not be able to attend on Wednesday as I have other commitments. I have 5 days work to do on my Macwester before I go back in the water and I have a Freeman 22 project at home which I have said I will have on the river by the end of July. I have to put an engine in (converting from petrol to diesel), install keel cooling, rewire, refurbish the wood inside and paint the outside. Friends and family have said I won't do it in that timescale...so I now have to do so ....otherwise I will take a lot of stick!

Enjoy your BBQ and Wednesday meet.

Paul

Re: BBQ stone point this w/e

Guys

Thank you all for the info - much appreciated. I have a friend who uses the Titchmarsh Marina slip and he speaks highly of the facility. I rang around today and found a slot at the Mepal Lakes near Ely, so we are going to spend Saturday there.
I pleased to know I'm welcome to join your BBQ's (subject to not causing any wobbles of course!) as I have an appreciation for all boaters right to use the sea and respect their rights of passage too.
Once again, thank you all for your help - looking forward to meeting some of you in the future.
