Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

The geological term is Bendrick Rock - Carboniferous limestone. This is overlaid by the Bendricks, which are Triassic marls and conglomerates.

That was an optimistic answer cos I thought it was a chart feature you were probably looking for.

The rocks overlying Bendrick Rock - The Bendricks - are famous for which certain feature, some of which was taken to Cardiff?

I am afraid not. Bendrick rock is to the East of Barry Harbour
The breakwater in question is to the West the Old Harbour

York rock would be a good guess then? Ive been thinking about leaning on the wall there on the next big tides to give the bottom a scrub.

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

Graham,Damo

Yes, York Rock. The end of the breakwater was built on the rock. Before the old harbour was so badly silted up,part of the rock was often exposed on the SW side.
A few boats each year do come in on the top of a tide and dry out on the N side near the steps on firm sand, just watch out for some swell coming around the breakwater head

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

We were all wrong anyway, just looked on the chart its Yorke Rock .

Your drifting down Channel West of Barry its flat calm so you decide to anchor for a lazy lunch and maybe a bit of fishing. Your about 3 miles WNW from the Breaksea buoy. Whats wrong with this plan?

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

You would going down with the ebb, to anchor in that position, you would most likley go aground at low water. Of course you don't say whether its springs or neaps

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

No its about 2 miles SSE from Breaksea Point. The exact position isnt critical to the question just the general area.

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

As you would be close to the channel leading into Nash Passage, you would experiance a strong tidal flow and overfalls as shown on the chart around St Donats Point .

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

No. Probably not a good question as you need a chart to spot the problem. So Ill wind this one up.

Pilot boarding area "A" for vessells constrained by draught is in position 3 miles WNW from the Breaksea racon buoy. There is a prohibited anchorage all around the area and as far up as just East of the Merkur buoy. also you wouldnt want something like this

turning up in the middle of your lunch.

230 meters LOA and 14 meters draught.

Someone else want to do the next Question?

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

I was thinking of the Breaksea Buoy which used to be off the power station. Using an old chart of course. Not the Breaksea Racon.

Dead right! Last summer, it was blocked off when I was there. It used to be a great place in a storm - you could pinch some chairs from downstairs and sit on the light platform, with a beer or several and fantastic views, as the gale lashed against the windows

I heard it had been blocked off. Shame; another fun, free thing off the list.
I've spent one night up there in a really vile storm and I concur with you that it is great. The size of those cast glazing bars and the fabulous quality if the class is a joy. Had a very silly night drinking and smoking with a mate.
I'll go now and wrack my head for a suitable question.
Cheers,
nicki

Lynmouth has a well-known specifically LH point break.

(I thought the north end of Croyde has a LH break over the reef?)

Re: Perpetual Quiz B.C. (20)

Spot on Damo. Lynmouth it is. North end of Croyde is a right over the reef (only on springs), but in a way you are also correct, as there is a little known left, sometimes called Leapys (it's near Baggy erm Leap, but can't confirm connection), but it is definitely not famous. To add a bit of confusion, it can also be a right or a straight on the rocks wave. Not often rideable.
I guess it's you again then Damo.
Nicki
