Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (24)

A port hand navigation buoy. Spotted it this morning.

No idea where it normally lives but it is at the moment on the deck of the Trinity House vessell "Mair" moored in Barry Harbour.

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (24)

They were all BC steamers.

Others included Waverley, Glen Usk, Glen Gower and several more. If you are looking for a build/commission date sequence then I'm not bored enough to trawl with google

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (24)

OK Damo, you get it by default/lack of interest.

The answer is Waverley. They were all steamers that were based at Clevedon pier, from the last, heading back to the first.
  • Britannia in 1896
  • Cambria in 1895
  • Westward Ho in 1894
  • Ravenswood in 1891
  • Waverley in 1886

OK then - a literary question

Barrack-room ballads, Captains Courageous and Snow Petrel are all associated with a certain building in a certain BC town. But what is the unique feature the town is famous for?

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (24)

Damo I haven't got anywhere but thanks to the question I've been reacquainting my self with Kipling. Apart from him going to school at Westward Ho I can't find another connection with BC. I'm obviously missing something but I'm clueless. Is it time for a further clue?

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (24)

Kipling went to the United Services College in Westward Ho! It is now apartments (Kipling Terrace - the big white building you can see for miles), where I lived for a couple of years, with great views of Lundy and the bay.

Westward Ho! is the only place name which officially has an exclamation mark in it

Over to you seedog....

Did I stumble into the right answer without realising? I didn't think Westward Ho! was in BC but when I got the map out to check I realised it is, but only just.

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (24)

For the purposes of the forum, the BC is Lands End to St Davids Head, including the Severn Estuary which is navigable by a yacht Otherwise it would be far too exclusive!
