Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

when I say "island", I was craving some tiny little clue. I could say "looks like granite or some metamorphic type, with crustose lichens" so likely to be SW England. Therefore guess N Cornwall.

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

You are right about the lichens though. The Xanthoria on the roof is usually an indicator of spray, and its position would suggest the building probably lies with its left edge in the South/West. I'm thinking South, as the door probably faces East.

I'm not with you on the granite though - I can't make out the grain size.

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

I was hedging bets on the granite..... Not much weather erosion, so pretty hard stuff anyway.

Given the daisies and (?) dandelions, this might be a recent photo, so the angle of the shadows means about midday. I'll go with the door facing E-ish. Alignment of ecclesiastical buildings is not always a clear cut E - W.

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

Yes, I had late morning, maybe 11am. The rocks probably are igneous, I can't see any obvious bedding planes. Only Igneous rocks I know in Wales are Pembs, so possibly North Devon?

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

Judging by the unique geological features coupled with the shadows being cast by the blades of grass I would hazard a guess at St Ives.

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

The steps are granite - obviously imported. The boulders look like finer grained igneous, possibly intermediate eg syenite.

I also concur with Pembrokeshire. St Davids area?

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

Pill Shark is one of the Pill Hobblers - the little work boats that run around in Avonmouth and Portbury.

Your right but I was after the historic origin of the name which is given to a certain group of people.

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

It was a perjorative name for the locals from Pill, who were engaged in smuggling, and fleecing sailors. Supposedly derived from the fact that transat ships would bait hooks with salt pork to catch sharks.

Some of them are now engaged in tidying away building materials and scrap metal around Port Marine. Allegedly

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

The way I have heard it is it was a name given to the Bristol Pilots who mostly came from Pill.(The name is still used to describe Bristol Pilots by Pilots from other Ports)

It came about from ships leaving Bristol would tow their freshly purchased meat astern so the salt water would cure it.

As the ship passed Pill the Pilot would have arranged for a young lad to swim out and cut the line holding the meat. When the crew of the ship noticed the meat gone the Pilot would blame sharks.

As your answer was along the right lines Over to you Dam,o.

Not surprised with the weather today. Cardiff Bay was fairly busy we went over late this afternoon for a trip across to Mermaid Quay and had a homemade Curry on board. With a little lager to damp down the throat afterwards

Re: Bristol Channel Quiz (25)

Easy Q - there are a few crews who will be singing this soon:

"Unite and unite let us all unite,
For summer is acome unto day,
And whither we are going we will all unite,
In the merry morning of May. "

Where will they be?
