plankes soaked in diesel
|
|
Can anyone help? We are currently rebuilding a 28Ft Norman Dallimore. All the planks below the water line have been soaked in Diesel, which has got into the seams. We are taking each plank off cleaning it sanding etc. But I can’t get all the diesel out. Any ideas how to get rid of it. We want to cork her and pay her up with a corking compound do you think this will stick if I don’t get the entire diesel out.

It might be worth trying rinsing the timbers with fairy liquid. Assuming the boat is blocked up you can rinse her through with a strong washing up liquid. You'll know when the timbers are ok because the oily sheen produced by the diesel will stop appearing. I hope this helps.

Once the worst of the diesel is off the surface it shouldn't matter. You should be able to get it caulked and puttied alright. Diesel soaks right in... but it might help preserve the timbers a bit?

These people have some very clever solutions using biological fluids to remove oil from concrete, so diesel in btween planks should be no problem.

Worth phoning them for advice.

You should try using anti freeze insteed of Diesal fuel' Or a steam box. Try a steam box note 1 Hr per 1/4 Inch of depth. To clean seams I would note that seams are not a problem but what is used for compounds is important note White Lead for Seam copounds Forum Discusions. But Anti Freeze is a great bending liquid .

Thanks for your help I have tried cleaning with fairy liquid and cillit bang and meny other products. I have scrubbed them as much as possible then sanded as the planks are off the boat this makes it a lot easier

As with many old wooden boats, we also have timbers saturated with diesel, and have antifouled over this OK each year, and antifoul is still well stuck each year from the previous year.
