DIY Painting boat names and graphics on hulls and sails

Howdy All.

Painting boat names and graphics on hulls and sails

[image]http://homepage.mac.com/peterhyndman/Sites/PDRinfo/PDRbuilding/Resources/signs3.jpeg[/image]

The method requires
computer and printer (no special software - any graphics or word processing program will do it)
a sharp knife
some spray adhesive (use the right way)
a scrap of fine sandpaper
a can of spray paint
and a spare half hour.

A friend has put up a page with text and pictures showing how.
DIY painting boat names and graphics on hulls and sails

It is not anything new, but is a nice photoessay and description of how to do it. Hope it helps someone.

BTW I don't quite trust or mandate the secondary promise in his byline!

Best wishes

Looks like quite a lot of very careful cutting by hand. Seems a lot of hassle doing it that way.
I make a stencil using a computer driven vinyl cuter. I then spray through the stencil. Huge range of fonts and graphics available. I also do names in marine grade vinyl.

Quite a fer offers for vinyl on ebay(not me).

I'd say it took about 20 minutes to do all the cutting for that quite long name and the graphics duck.

It is nice process. And you can say ... I did that!

But you are right - the big problem with handdrawn efforts is that it is really hard to keep all the "A"s the same size and the right distance apart. Using the computer even with a manual cut means that it looks great.

And it is a good tip about leaving bridging pieces that get cut out later - that will work for those with a vinyl cutting plotter too.

People don't know the value of turning of the TV and sitting down at a table with a very sharp knife and evil intent!

MIK :-)

I did'nt look at the site but the way I do is to lay up some Blue Painters tape where I want the words. Take letters I have printed out off Microsoft word and tape them on top of the Blue Tape. Then use a razor to cut through them and the blue tape underneath and then peel off the tape and paint. The Tape keeps the paint from running. when dry just peel off the rest of the tape and your good.
