Where to re Varnish in Med
|
|
Having just returned from my 1961 C&N 44 based in southern Spain I cannot wait any longer to revarnish the exterior. Also need to re caulk. Need to strip down completely and start afresh. A lot of time and Big bucks in the normal marinas. Thinking of sailing to North Africa - maybe the Spanish enclave of Mellila or Ceuta and get a team of 4 with a fore man who speaks the lingo. Am I mad?? Anyone with similar challenges?

Try Marina Smir, 12 miles south of Ceuta. Buy your materials in Gib at duty free prices first though. Not a classic but we have had and seen very good work done there. Reccomended!!

PS Ceuta for work is awful and expensive.

I have a Portugese chap who is just about to finish on my 50 footer. He has done a lot of structural stuff below, as well as recaulk the decks and revarnish and paint. He will be available in about 4 weeks to start on a new project. If you can get the boat to Lisbon he would be happy to do it, and very reasonable. (Boat above was in CB in April, Yard News.) PM me for more details.

I just finished a week ago re-varnishing my hull and the mast (skipped re caulking, will be next time). I'm based on the French Riviera so that's not quite relevant to you but note this is the peak season and I suppose yard charges in your area too should be much cheaper in just a couple of months. Also, it's best if you can do everything yourself.

If you are willing to travel a bit further along the Spanish Coastline
I can recommend from personal experience a yard on the Costa Blanca Varadero Vatasa. Santa Pola Alicante

Many thanks. I'll look into Marina Smir.
