engine bilge

I have removed the engine for the purpose of renovating it. Whilst it is out I also want to repaint the bilge underneath it.
I wish to strip back to bare wood but the timber is soaked in 40 years of engine oil leaks any ideas on the best degreaser etc to do this. And the best paint to use.
many thanks

Re: engine bilge

Hi meldrum.

With regard to the best paint to use, I guess various people may suggest different paints, but I've used the bilge paints as sold in chandlerys.
On my previous Hillyard I used Danboline (made by International?) which I found to be very hard wearing and perfect for the job.
On the Hillyard I have now I am using Blakes bilge and locker paint. I was given these tins by a friend who bought them many years ago, but never got around to using them. I've only just started using this paint, but I have no doubt it will be hard wearing and long lasting too.

Doug
