Fastenings - remove or double-up?

Another days work; something else to sort out. Whilst removing the paint from the inside of my 1912 yawl, I came across some fastenings that are a bit dodgy. The vast majority are fine, but there are a number, all in the same area, where the roves are disintegrating into bright pink dust.
What is the recommended way of dealing with this; knock the old ones out and replace, or leave them in and add extras close by?
Suggestions would be appreciated.

I think I would knock the old ones out, re-drill one size up, and fit new, one size up fastenings. Always assuming that the timbers / planking is sound of course?

any idea what is causing the deterioration in what appears to be a localised area, before you replace them ?

Re: Fastenings - remove or double-up?

Donkey's years is probably correct. All the fastenings were under paint of various thicknesses both inside and out. Outside looks perfect, it's only on the inside where the problem appears. Maybe it because it's in the forepeak where the anchor chain lies - but it's well above chain height and only on the starboard side. Mmmmm the same side as where the paint is flakey. Maybe in an earlier life this area got all the sun. Who knows! The question still remains, remove or double-up?

Remove and replace, much tidier than doubling up.

No point in making any more holes in the hull than necessary, especially very close to exisiting holes, so remove and replace.

OK, it's remove & replace. Thanks for the advice.
