Finding a Portsmouth Yardstick?

We're planning to enter one of our club's cruiser races, as we quite like the comfort factor over racing our dinghy. However, obviously we need some sort of PY number in order to compete.

Although there are many other 6 ton Hillyards around and about, it's highly unlikely that any are the same as Ruthie. We have different hull shape and rig plan to any I've seen so far.

Is there a source for PY numbers, beyond the obvious dinghy ones, or is there a way to calculate your own PY number. I assume they are found by a number of timed runs over a set distance in competition with a boat with a known PY, but has anyone any more details.

If not, we'll take part anyway and try to blag the best advantage we can... Everyone knows these old wooden Hillyards are as slow as anything!

Any help or advice would be fantstic, thank you. Jess.

Re: Finding a Portsmouth Yardstick?

I seem to recall that either Bill Beavis or Des Sleightholme found the original Portsmouth Yardstick in an old lady's attic . . . . Perhaps it's around at the YM office now?

Re: Finding a Portsmouth Yardstick?

The original yrdstick is at Langstone Sailing club was on the wall there for many years until it was realised it should be put in safekeeping http://www.langstonesc.org.uk/lsc/content.php/history

It wont work out what PY a boat should have though just works out results

Re: Finding a Portsmouth Yardstick?

The PY scheme has a method of working out a yardstick for you. It involves getting a ‘temporary’ or estimated yardstick and then working out the performance yardstick you over several races. This will give you a PY you can use. That how in th elongrun they are all done wiht annual club yardstick returns.

Check the RYA PY booklet for details.
