Re: marine carpet Help

Why not try a good quality cord backed carpet from a normal carpet shop i had mine done a few years ago and they even stiched the edges alot cheaper than a marine supplier.

Re: marine carpet Help

I'm just in the process of replacing my deck carpets.

I have the current ones to use as patterns, and I'm off to the carpet shop to get some decent stuff - NOT rubber backed, but preferably canvas backed on the basis that they occasionally get wet. The current rubber backed carpets stick when they get wet leaving traces of rubber all over the deck.

As they're strange shapes I was looking for someone to 'bind' the edges. A bit of research on t'internet revealed that it's called 'whipping'. (Never knew that). But then I discovered this;

http://www.easybind.co.uk/

clicky for installation video.

Looks interesting and relatively straightforward, so I'll give it a go.

Re: marine carpet Help

thanks peeps great ideas just had that last night said to wife Im off to general george to fimd a grey nylon man made with no rubber backing as this must be water/rot proof. only thing is I went to the shop asked the guy for a man made possibly outdoor carpet - he looked at me strangely. I looked around but nothing that would look similar a;lso they all had a thick white nylon felt - ish backing which I thought would just hold more water. anyone else tried ordinary carpet. I was hoping to ohnly replace the floor as I have all the other pieces which I have jetcwashed ready to stick bak on with the carpet adgesive from spray cans - is this Ok or should I replace all carpet using the old one as a template ????? decisions decisions ?????????????????

Re: marine carpet Help

Boyriven in Wembley used to be the place to buy all your boating carpets and vinyls. Haven`t been there for many years but certainly used them in the past for deck carpet (no backing, allows water through).

Their telephone number used to be 020 8902 9581

Hope that helps.

Re: marine carpet Help

Have you thought of Flotex ? All sorts of colours and thicknesses.

We have had the stuff down in the wheelhouse for a bout 8 years.

Loads of stockists.

Re: marine carpet Help

I used breathable camping groundsheet. Easy to cut and does not fray. It is relatively cheap, easy to get hold off and as it is an open construction water just passes through it so it dries rapidly. Does not need cleaning just up pop it, shake it out and sweep the deck underneath

It was fixed down with poppers in each corner and it meant I could have a separate section over the engine hatch easing access

I intended it as a temporary solution but it has seen one good years use and seems to be wearing well

Re: marine carpet Help

Id much rath still get the original stuff. because the sides are very large and cut out quite intricately and they jet washed well. so really just the floor. tried every carpet shop, no one has any idea. now onto upholsterers as is seems more like a thick nylon material theres no backing it just looks though it glued together underneath. Has no one out there replaced their carpet with similar to the original ???? help please

Re: marine carpet Help

I used thes guys for my replacement BMB. I had to send a paper template but for the Bayliners I am sure they will already have a pattern.

Their carpet is ther real deal and you wouldn't need to replace it again. I was very pleased with price and service!

They're called 'Snapin Carpets' Here

Don't ask them to fit the poppers though as they will never be exactly right. Just get them to send some poppers with the carpet to add when you get it.

You will need their poppers though because the centre pin is longer to go through the thickness of the waterproof backing.

Re: marine carpet Help

thanks all. tiko Ill try that number tomoro.
Rodgerrat that looks like a good site but are they not in america.
Kawasaki I looked at the Flotex website is it not a bit kitchen looking. fine for inside a boat but not open topped I dont think have sat countless samples inside thay all look terrible. They just look like house carpet. I must admit I am a bit of a restoration freak. I dont like changing anything in what I restore, I try and make it look like the original when built, even houses. anyone else got an upholstry business that has seen this kind of material. its like an 8-10mm thick bit of Fuzzy Felt (remember that kids) but not just as smooth more of a nylon webb/felt.

Re: marine carpet Help

Hi ian, yes the plain medium grey coloured. But the girl at marine called me back(very gratefull) and gave me a number for rainbow carpets in poole but the number isnt working, maybe I took it down wrong! but she did say she hadnt anything near like what I was looking for- but hey if you can ask if you think someone there nows better i'd be most gratefull. I think 3 x 2 meters would cover it in one piece but I dont mind joining if I can only get strips a meter wide or anything slightly similar. cheers

Re: marine carpet Help

This is someone I know who supplies all sorts of nylon carpets for Coaches. They have stuff with backing and without. They can cut to templates and send by courier throughout the UK.

It might be worth seeing what they have available,
