Volvo 290 Leg

Just nipping round with grease gun before plopping the boat in for the summer. Am i right in thinking there are just 2 grease points on the 290 leg ?

TIA

Re: Volvo 290 Leg

fwiw .. I found ...
swing the leg as you grease it, it helps to get it through. Also you'll have previously regularly done the steering head as well, accessed in engine room at top of transom internally - swing steering as well. Presume your on water type aqua grease ??
Found on mine that after a few years of non greasing by 'engineers' (ta vp agent) the grease inside the steering head went solid and plugged up the journels that carry the grease down into the moving bits causing wear to bushes and eventually the dribble of water internally ...

Me neither, would Volspec not have done it?

Chris,

I had the same problem as Mont, you had better look at yours. Its hard to get at so they dont bother. I had to have a new leg trim pot fitted because the water got in there.

Re: Volvo 290 Leg

Fwiw....
Me feels Volspec should have done if they did a leg service / engine service I would have thought.
Rant...
I had a 'full leg and engine service' done but the VP agent I used (not volspec) didnt bother even though they ticked the box. VP specialist 12 months later also didnt either so perhaps its not included in a full engine and leg service - or maybe I'm a bi thick on the subject ?
I'd describe the steering head / grease point as a bit like a stern gland on shaft boats it needs regularly greasing to keep it packed so it dont leak and from my reading it should be removed and stripped down every two years and cleaned down, new bushes (about a tenner) etc as well.
Its the thread from a few weeks ago about 'cant remove the steering arm' etc its a bugger when seized in. Builders often also dont allow enough clearance on the boat transom to get at when installing = double bugger.
Me feels this should form part of the expensive leg off major two year service that I previously paid for and many others pay for still thats often talked about. With regular greasing, bi-annual removal with cleaning out and re-packing etc it stops the nastys later in life. Rant over. bye.

Re: Volvo 290 Leg

I only have one grease point on each of my 290 DP-E legs and that is on the steering spindle as VP call it, to me it's a steering arm!
This is how I do the greasing on a S28, I first remove (unscrew) the crankcase breather filters, this is so you can see the grease points that are on the port side of the steering arm, I then turn the wheel to port so that the grease points are now moving towards the centre on the outdrive, then basically lying on top of the engine I guide the grease gun onto the grease point, making sure nice and square on the grease point and pump the grease on in. I tend to do this about once a month or so, it sounds worst then it is. You will see once the filters are off the best position to move the outdrives to.
Then put the filters back on knowing the job has been done.
I hope this is of some help.

Steve
