Anodes
|
|
Last season I re-engined and put on a new prop. When the boat came out for anti-fouling I noticed the prop was going "pink". Testing the continuity on the anode circuit showed no continuity. Further investigation suggested that because the gearbox was the "Cone type", this was the reason for no continuity. Any ideas on how to overcome this other than by using what looks to be relatively Heath Robinson devices to hold carbon brushes on the shaft and wire those in?

I assume you are shaft drive rather than outdrive .
The shaft brushes do work, I have them, I also put on shaft anodes with a jubulee clip either side to stop them sliding up or down as a belt and braces aproach.
Check with your engine dealer about conectivity through the gearbox and engine.

Test between the shaft and engine. Do you have a flexible coupling? If so check that there is an earth strap across 2 of the bolts - if not then this is your problem.
I have seen the brush type of earthing and on measuring the resistance in real-time while turing the shaft the continuity is not particularly great so I would stay away from these if possible or use them as a secondary connection to earth, not the primary.

Thanks to you all for the input on this one. Barrus / Yanmar did not bother to reply to a direct request for help. I will give Clements Marine a call and if they don't have anything I guess it will be down to fitting the Heath Robinson solution.
