Whipping!

NOOOO! Not that kind of whipping

I have just added a stern anchor to my boat and I had thought about finding someone who would make up the end of the anchor rode warp with an eye so that I can shakle the warp to the chain. Then I found a great book (the name of which escapes me as it is on the boat!) but I thought I would have a go myself.

Bought a splicing spike and some whipping twine and off I went. First was properly whipping the ends the mooring warps, then I had a go at back-splicing on a thimble for the anchor rode.

All went rather well. Not the tidiest back splice I have seen but it is certainly servicable. I am sure I will improve with a bit more practice. I will never worry again about splicing a loop or thimble on the end of a 3-strand rope... now, splicing braided rope looks a little harder

Re: Whipping!

Braided rope is horrible! I can do it at a push, but I hate it. 3 strand I can do in my sleep.

Re: Whipping!

I once watched a fellow forumite spend an entire afternoon putting a single eyesplice in a braided rope.....

And probably wasting about 5m of the stuff in the process!

I wasted over 1m just doing my first back splice in 3 strand... restarted a couple of times! I think I will buy 50% more than I need when I try braided... not yet tho'... I need more practice with 3 strand!

Re: Whipping!

If you need a lesson with braid come round for a cup of tea:-)
You've seen our mooring lines haven't you - all done with these fair hands :-)

Re: Whipping!

Wait until you try eye splicing a 40mm 7 strand wire (not forgetting the locking tuck), used to take two of us about a couple of hours.

My memories are of the air being blue and blood everywhere !!

Thankfully, not much call for it nowadays.

Not since they closed all the pits, we used it on the haulage roads, I was the rope mans gofor, the splice was about 30 feet long, and almost invisible when finished.
