Anyone advise please? Have a holding tank with gauge that isn't registering. Have checked gauge and it seems to work when I put 12 volts through it so suspect issue is with the sensor on top of the holding tank which is connected to the float. Have seen a replacement (about £100+) but wonder if there is anything else I can replace it with. Is this the most reliable way to measure the level? Thanks all. |

What kind of sensor is it, ie what make and how old? |

Are you sure the sensor is not bunged up inside the tank with you know what? They are well known for sticking and need occasional open up and clean. (not a pleasant job) |

I've actually done the worst bit and taken it out and cleaned it. I've now brought it home so that I can check it ... not sure how I'm going to do that yet though!! ![]() It's a vetus as per the item half way down this page Vetus float ... Any ideas how I might check it at home ... thought I could somehow connect up to a car battery!! If you hear a large explosion... |

It may behave much like a resistor hence as you move the sensor up and down the resistance of the unit should change...at least thats what mine does. |

Hi, I also have the same gauge on my holding tank and for 3 years thought it was duff and didn't bother with it - until the tank overflowed into the boat! Having cleared up all the crap and taken the thing apart I discovered that it had been working all the time, and heres the good bit - it only works at the top 25% of the tank! So, you fill the tank to 75% and the guage still shows naff all, but then the last few pumps will quickly push it up to full. To check that you have the same problem measure the lift of the float from fully down to horizontal and check that against the depth of your tank, or try filling the tank with water down the pumpout and sight the water in the tank before refitting the gauge for a reading. |

http://www.wemausa.com/index.htm I found these people most helpful when I wanted to replace the sender in the holding tank of a Broom 33. A US company but they do have a UK distributor but can't remember who. They will confirm. 1st measure the depth of tank and at what point you wish the guage to start operating. They can calibrate accordingly. Incidentally their senders are much better suited to "holding tanks". |

http://www.bepmarine.com/store/web/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1648 This device mounts on top of the tank. Nothing gets into the tank and you can use the old instrument. You must measure the height of the tank before ordering. |

In Norway I saw a price of Nkr. 700,-. About 70 GB pounds. Could be cheaper in GB. Michael |
