Re Chroming

Obviously covered before but...
I read with interest in May PBO 497 "Restoring a Kingfisher 25" that Peter O'Brien rechromed a multitude of parts and economically too.
I have 6 Lewmar winches on my Super Seal (1980) which would benefit from the treatment.
Do Lewmar offer a service?
If Peter, or somone that knows him, or the boat (in Pwllheli) could advise where he had his rechroming done, I would be grateful.
Is rechroming as succesful as the original?
Just off to race, short handed, around the World
(Islands/Dubai, that is!!!)

I had a large motorcycle silencer rechromed some while back and they made a superb job of it. The company was;

Like Flossdog, I got mine done by a local company. The company I used in Barnsley had built quite a little business doing refurb for people as not many companies want to deal with small jobs. My lewmar 40's cost me £30 for he pair 7 years ago which was a fantastic price compared to other qoutes(if I could get a quote)

A winch has to be hard chromed wich is a different process from decorative chroming.Only that will do!!

This site looks lik a good read for anyone thinking of DIY chromium plating.
I have not selected it for any particular reason, it was the first hit by Google. I was just interested to know the difference between hard and decorative plating.

I too read that bit about all the parts being re-chromed for about £300. I recently had four opening ports, oval about 16" x 6", rechromed in London. They made a superb job, but they were nearer to £300 EACH (well certainly more than £200 each, I try not to remember).
There was more work involved than I had anticipated and while I cannot comment on whether or not I was overcharged, I thought it was worth warning that a serious job might cost serious money. I can't say if I would have had them done if I had known how much it was going to cost when I took them out, but they certainly look superb and probably good for another 30 years.

It's not just the rechroming that is important, the suface finish has to be perfect. If the substrate is pitted it will need copper plating with a self levelling solution and then this will inturn need polishing before nickel plating (which gives it the colour) and then chrome plating to protect it.
There is no way I would advise trying to do it yourself at home.
