Hit and Run

Whilst moored off Brownsea Island POOLE Harbour on the night of June 12 2004 I was awoke by a violent rocking of the boat (Moody 346). Putting this down to the truck ferry speeding , I only discovered a day later in Cherbourg that the boat had a neat 4" x 2" hole 12" above the water line.
Anyone with an idea as what could have caused this?
PS Boat yard in Cherbourg did a great job

Re: Hit and Run

Some people show no courtesy! I have been thinking about this one, I know thw watres reasonably well.
1/ Jet Ski (quite a few round there)
2/ Someone leaving/picking up a mooring with a low slung transom/swim platform
or
3/ someone in quite a small boat (inflatable?) trying to fend off in the dark

That's all I can think of with a hole so low.
1 & 3 possibly returning from a trip to a local watering hole !!

Re: Hit and Run

I would have thought if it was a collision, the bang would have woken you before the rocking.

Thought it could be caused by an anchor stock, but it sounds to low down to be that.
Can't imagine it would be a dinghy (not heavy enough) or a jet ski (in the dark??)

Bit of a mystery I'm afraid.

Sorry to hear of your plight, and hope it wasn't too painful to fix.

Re: Hit and Run

Sounds strange to me, how come he didn't sink on the way across the channel, big hole 12" above the waterline, surely on one tack or the other he would have been taking on water.

And as you say it would have been a hell of a loud bang!

Re: Hit and Run

you must have been well pissed and comatose not to have heard the bang that caused that sort of damage.
