Writing to your MP

I have been boating on the Thames for about 10 years and like many of you, I feel very strongly about the proposed sale of Lock Houses, and agree with the sentiment that it will be bad for the River and for those who enjoy it in a wide variety of ways.

Regarding my concerns I wrote to the EA [no reply to date] and also my MP who replied very swiftly, stating that signing EDM 742 was not the best way to raise the profile of our concerns, but that she would take the matter to the Minister, Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State responsible. I see to date 17 MP’s have signed the motion, but thought this may be another way of getting attention and hopefully action to this issue which I see as a further erosion of the things that are Great about Great Britain.

Re: Writing to your MP

I was emailed by my MP yesterday who advised that he has signed, and that he feels that is is an approrpiate use of Parliamentary time. Who is your MP? I also asked my MP to raise a question in The House but have had no comments on that one.

I think most MPs are focussed on Crewe atm and that matters will resume before PMQ next week.

Well one MP seems to be getting involved.

Re: Writing to your MP

Philip Hammond MP has replied to my mail, saying:-

"I have received a number of letters and emails on this subject and have arranged a meeting with Members of Parliament who are affected, river users, the lock keepers themselves and the EA in the House of Commons the week after next. This will allow us to clarify what is proposed and to seek any necessary assurances.

I will write to you and the other interested parties after the meeting has taken place"

So it looks like something is happening at a fairly high level!

I wonder why Surrey, arguably the worst affected in the 2002 flooding which is generally (although not officially, oh no) believed to have been caused by teething problems with the Jubilee river (ie weir and sluice operations) is losing by far the most property. Couldn't be anything to do with the high prices round 'ere?

Sir, you are a cynic.

My brother-in-law's remark that "get three or four exec homes on that plot with planning per" when shown Sunbury#2 would never have occurred to the bean counters.

Even more scary, I might be right, it has not...
