Halfway through his book "To the Baltic with Bob" which is about the same boat. Cracking read, especially if you've sailed the area.

On balance i think it was a good programme to entertain the masses,if it was a serious look at sailing it would have been scheduled at some obscure hour,i loved it and cant wait till the next one.

1/ the boat was already in London therefore already been though the barrier 2/ no pilot req for the barrier 3/ the aircraft fly-by = MCA advertising 4/ leaving Dover with a gale forecast with novice crew
all 4 starters a total waste of a golden opportunity

The creek where Griff was seen in a boatyard, and standing reminiscing about his father's boat, was Oare Creek. The pub with the daft notices outside the door is the Shipwrights Arms at the junction of Oare and Faversham Creek (there are even more ludicrous notices inside). The pub has the most negative and miserable landlord in the world. The 3 of them did no passage sailing, there was a delivery crew. All smoke and mirrors.

Like Top Gear, much of the action is scripted. No doubt their insurance company insisted on additional/delivery crew members, and the shadowing RIB. Produced for, and delivered, great entertainment.

Thank god someone else said it too! I didn't want to be the first!

Re: Timely reminder; Three Men in Another Boat:
|

I thought that it provided very enjoyable entertainment.
Need to sack the continuity person - when they were 'aground' - the head sail kept disappearing and reappearing - dependant on the shot. Also the main did similar in the heavy weather shots.
Loved the bit where they were trying to beat upwind of the barge - but the keel was still wound up!
Will need to organise the VCR for part 2, cos I'll be out.
Beautiful yacht - hard to believe that she is 45' or 49' LOA from the interior shots.

Re: Timely reminder; Three Men in Another Boat:

I side with the 'loved it' brigade. Of course I could start getting upset about the continuity, the falseness of some of it, the scripting of the scenes, but some of it couldn't have been scripted and a lot of it was just funny. Our whole family watched it and recognised some of the things that happen. I am sure that hitting his head getting out of the berth was not as scripted as some bits. He hit it too hard!
Enjoy the boat, and the occasional insights into Gryff's sailing. He might have more money than me, but he admits to having a relationship with his boat that a lot of people on these forum might recognise and admit to as well.
Even SWMBO thought that their crew recruiting criteria was funny. I am sorry that they only showed expensive boat prices (yet again). When will the media start getting the message that most people start sailing on the cost of less than a second car? A couple of thousand or more will get you afloat and this is never mentioned.

Re: Timely reminder; Three Men in Another Boat:

Hugely enjoyable. I did suspect there was something odd about the passage making when it cut from them leaving the Swale to entering Dover Harbour without North Foreland in between, and then cut from them leaving Dover in a lumpy blow to entering Brighton Marina in a flat calm. Did they actually put back into port after each shot and let the passage crew take her around?
I found Dara and Rory much better behaved than they'd been on the Thames trip, and the tea-making was hilarious.
Still, it must have been crowded on there - the three of them, the cam crew and the sound man.

3/ the aircraft fly-by = MCA advertising
Don't see your problem here.
1 - The MCA Islander aircraft is airborne pretty much all the time over the CNIS area - any unidentified yacht would be likely to get buzzed as it enters or transits the seperation zone,
2 - MCA / HMCG are public services and the look behind the scenes at Dover will have interested a lot of people and may have educated a few. Any publicity that helps prevent rouge vessels and collisions is hardly black propoganda...

I really enjoyed seeing a bit of boaty content on prime time TV and SWMBO enjoyed/sympathised with the novice crew bit. I very much enjoyed it and am dissapointed that it's only two episodes in duration. Would be great to see a 'Coast' type program done by sea.

Well yep, but when looking round the bénéteau and they said it was (£140,000?) he was saying about he'd spent just that on restoring Undina!
Then when they were given the figure Rory and Dara made it out to be 'Over 4 times what he'd spent on it so far" but surely it isn't worth £560,000!?! I must have misunderstood as usual
Surpised we havent got a broker on here that could help out...

I didn't realise Josephine had been sold. It belonged to Tim Blackman, moored in the Medina in the summer, and lifted out at Attrills in Bembridge Harbour for a few weeks each winter. It is in super condition. Tim Blackman was, I believe, one of the founder members of the British Classic Yacht Club.

I enjoyed it- so did the rest of my family, we all knew it was cut/edited /staged for entertainment purposes but that didn't matter. What annoyed me is that I didn't realise that the beautiful boat moored on my pontoon a few feet away from my boat in the summer was her- I would have lurked trying to get on the TV! But I did see a few glimpses of my boat in the Brighton shots- must try the iBBC thing to see more.

I think if you go through a public proxy server located in the UK you might be able to view it.
I just took a quick look and http://www.prxy.co.uk/ has a box at the bottom where you can type the address.
Give it a try - when I tried it thought I was from the UK - but then I am ;o) If it doesn't work there are other public proxies that you could Google.

Re: Timely reminder; Three Men in Another Boat:

I enjoyed the programme and it was great to see shots of a beautiful yacht on telly. I have seen her up close and she is simply gorgeous. It brought home to SWMBO that we don't need a bigger boat to have more space, just a newer one.
I can't see that anyone on here is really so naive as to think it's not scripted, rehearsed and staged, in places at least, or that there wasn't a crew on board and a safety boat nearby. You could even see it in some of the shots and who do you think is doing the filming?!

Re: Timely reminder; Three Men in Another Boat:
|

Thinking aloud here, rather than giving advice you understand, but if you logged on via a proxy server based in the UK, you would have a UK IP address. If you do a google on public proxy servers you may be able to find a UK one (these change quite often, so you may have to repeat this process many times if you want to use iPlayer regularly, and being public servers, you don't know their intent, so make sure you have firewall and good antivirus etc, and only use if for downloading BBC content, not doing banking or anything that would give away personal information and make sure you don't use the same password for anything over the proxy you use elsewhere!!!!!!) Though in honesty, you'll probably struggle to find a public proxy in the UK with sufficient bandwdidth to support downloading or streaming from iPlayer.
If you know someone with a business in the UK, and their own server, who knows and trusts you, you could do the same with a proxy server or VPN (virtual private network) with limited network access (just need internet access from the network)
These are the two probably easiest to set up, though there are many other ways.

Did anyone notice the outboard?
|
|
Was it a Yamaha 2.5hp 2 stroke?

Well yep, but when looking round the bénéteau and they said it was (£140,000?) he was saying about he'd spent just that on restoring Undina!
I thought he said that was what he'd spent on varnish!

It was an elderly and battered Mariner 2. In the words of Number One Son: "Look, Dad - he's got our outboard"!

Ooh mebbe, I was watching and working at the same time I'm afraid, so I wasn't paying full attention

Yes, he said it was what he'd spent on varnishing, hence rather tongue in cheek. I've recorded it, so can transcribe his exact words if necessary.
The later comments about the value of the boat by the two 'crew' were about what he'd bought the boat for, not what he'd spent on it subsequently.

That won't be necessary but thanks for pointing that out otherwise I may have thought he was serious.

I wasn't pointing it out to you (as you recalled correctly, and was agreeing with you), but to the others on many threads that are discussing pricing.

While we are picking holes: they go aground in the East Swale, (who hasn't) but we are then told: no worries the tide is rising. I can't believe that anyone with GRJ,s experience would leave there on the flood when bound for Dover. As has been said, nice to watch, and great to see mates' boats in the background, but not to be taken seriously.
