My preference is to use Aquatabs (or similar) on a regular basis to keep the system clean, and use a good domestic drinking water filter. The filter can be installed in the cold supply which will restrict flow slightly or via a separate tap sometimes supplied with the filter. Replace filter annually and also flush through if not used for a while and you will have odour and taste free water.

i've had some success with bleach in vetus flexible tanks. I put a cup in each tank, sailed around for a day and then pumped it out and refilled. Tasted much less plasticy but a bit chloriney for a while.

Jabsco 'Aqua-Filta' makes water taste like spring water. Brilliant!

Yup, jabsco filter is superb.
tany normal non scented 5 or 6% sodium hypochlorite solution (Bleach !) works well for sterilising.. 6 to 8 drops per gallon (WHO recommendations) expensive water filters are just that - expensive.

If you could see what was living in your water tank you might change your mind!

Nothing !

Struggled with this for a number of years and tried various filters and potions. Nothing worked and this year fitted the General Ecology Naturepure filter. Brilliant-better tasting water than from the tap at home and apparently bug free. Expensive but what price a good cup of tea!

Very many years ago I ran the student bar and beer lines and pumps are cleaned with "line-cleaner". I decided that if it was good enough for student ales it's good enough for tea water! It works a treat, I got mine from pub supply agents via yellow pages (about £20 for 5 litres of concentrate and that will be enough to clean my three tanks annually for ten years). If you are on good terms with your local landlord you might be able to get him to give you a small jar-full.

Beerline cleaner Looking at that I think I might as well stick to my favourite, namely a drop of Milton solution.
