Sant Carles Marina

Does anyone know anything about the area around this new MDLmarina in Spain, what's the local cruising ground like? The area looks to be part of a nature reserve, are there any anchoring restrictions?

I like the idea of being able to get my berth back at Hamble Point Marina After 4 years if i want to return.

Re: Sant Carles Marina

The area - the mouth of the river Ebre/Ebro is flat and sandy. We sailed from Vilanova i la Geltru, which we liked, to anchor off Sant Carles (round the corner from the harbour) and then to Peniscola, which we weren't so keen on (although we also anchored by the harbour there, which was fine).
When we were there - July - the weather was hot and rounding the Ebre delta it was flat calm. There seemed to be no anchoring restrictions and we could see a number of yachts moored in the large bay/lagoon east of Sant Carles. I don't know about the north side of the delta. Depths are shallow as I recall (just look on Google map . . . ) and I guess seas will kick up quickly when there's a blow.
Looking back, could be nice quiet cruising ground, but might get a bit boring after a while. But Barcelona's within easy reach - for culture, excitement (and muggings!).

Re: Sant Carles Marina

I am heading down there next week to take up a mooring in the marina, so should have more to say later.

It is an interesting and very Spanish old holiday resort, so nothing like Benidorm/Torremolinos.

You can watech the construction of the marina here:

The local cruising area is not too interesting, just a few ports like Vinaros and Cambrils/Salou, but it is only 90 miles to the Baleares and I would expect most people to head there for their cruises.

The Ebro delta does need treating with some respect, my old friends France and Christian Guillain were shipwrecked there back in the early 70s and took an age to get their Joshua afloat again as the shoals are unpredictable everchanging and extensive.
