Return to wind power

I intend to go back to sailing . At the moment I am looking at two boats , A kestrel Clinker (wood) and a Galion (GRP) both 22 Ft . Anybody have any experience with these boats and what I should look out for ? Any input would be appreciated .

I know the Gallion, very robust and roomy but not much performance. Don't know the Kestral but with any wooden boat if possible take along someone that knows wood for an initial inspection before paying a survayor.

There was an enthusiastic discussion on Kestrels recently on the Classic Boat forum :

Re: Return to wind power

I asked the kestrel question above. I was keen & the hull I saw looked a good shape for a stable fun day sailor, definatley not built for speed or upwind.

I didn't buy it in the end as the one on offer had bent mast, no gear, no rigging worth sailing & was nothing but a hull worth saving - too much for me to start on.

I felt she had character - but I just love the whole wooden boat thing. If you've seen them both and they add up on paper - then go with the one you covet most. If you can't stop drooling, then you've met your girl.

Thanks for the info , I may go for the Galion but the Kestrel does look pretty . It does need the mast repaired and I want to go sailing this year . So realistically I will go for the boat that needs the least work .

Re: Return to wind power

I think the Galion was considered to have a good performance in its time. I remember sailing "against" one in about '74 and finding we were fairly matched in my Cirrus which was about level with the Hurley 22 which had a good reputation. Certainly faster than a Kestrel, which doesn't mean it's a better boat. I know a couple who had their honeymoon in a Kestrel.

Re: Return to wind power

PBO did an article and boat test on the Galion in March this year (issue no. 495). They reckoned it 'A fast, comfortable and roomy cruiser... seriously under-rated'. You can get a copy of the article via this website or post/phone for about £4.
