Wasps/Bees / Flies - French ot English?

Sailing back fro CI yesterday in nice sunshine and good reach (until the wind died!) about mid channel suddenly started to gain some extra passengers. First were the flies then many wasps and also a number of bees.

As we were approx 24mls from France and 36mls from England were they illegal immigrants?

Two of us wearing yellow Musto suits were very popular!! Has anyone else experienced this and where did they come from? As it was near the main shipping route were they from a ship?

Did ask to see their passports but they quite correctly ignored me as un-important!

Wasps/Bees/Flies - French/English/Maybe tropical?

Dear Sailfree,

We have just had the same experience mid-Channel. We heard some distinctly non-Euopean VHF chatter and were then passed by a container ship that was outside the shipping lanes, going at high speed and smelling very peculiar. We then had an infestation of 3 different types of insects in substantial numbers. There were:
1. Bog-standard flies
2. Mosquitoes which contained mammalian red blood (hopefully not ours)
3. Wasp-like insects of a distinctly non-European type.

We crossed the Channel on 2nd July, so this is probably the same consignment of fruit (?bananas) that went past you on Tuesday. Like you, we couldn't remember if insects could fly cross-channel distances.

If you can get this many bees in a truck, what could you get in a ship?
