Cadetships
      #1169111 - 17/09/2006 07:44

I work and live outside the UK. My yougest son left school in July with no idea what he wants to do. He now tells me he would like join the Merchant Navy. I am out of touch did my ISP in 1976 and all my tickets at Plymouth, which I understand is now closed. Does any one have any idea if there is a careers advice centre that could help him, or know of any Companies that are sponsoring Cadetships or what ever they call them these days.

Rgds

And thanks for any information.

Thought i would add a quick bit to this subject.

I am 34 and thought i would see if i could change my carrer to that of a merchant deck officer. I contacted all the schools, companies and training facilities. They all told me the same thing.

All they were interested in was 16 year olds sraight from school that are sponsred by an employer.

I even offered to pay for my training but they all said no.

Any comments

There were a few "mature" students when I was a cadet in Cork natucial college, I woudn't have thought that you were over the hill at 34.

there are plenty of sailors who opt to become deck officers at that age .... you have been talking to the wrog people.

try my link above and if they are not interested in taking you on themselves (for whatever reason - and dont forget age discrimination is now illegal) ask them for more contacts

Try Northern Marine Ship Management (www.nmm-stena.com)
They are still taking on cadets
